Combining historical footage, television and industrial clips, statistics and personal stories, this documentary is a humorous but cautionary portrait of America's romance with disposability. The narrator takes the viewer on a personal rummage through the world of garbage that begins in her New England backyard and culminates in a small Texas town. Along the way, she talks about trash with her garbage collector, with Professor Bill Rathje, a garbage archaeologist, and with Donald Collier, eking out a living from people's discards on the streets of Brooklyn. The narrator's journey ends on a serious Note in Ferris, Texas, a community torn apart by the establishment of a colossal landfill.
