Description: The life and work of controversial photographer Robert Mapplethorpe (sick with AIDS at the time of filming) is discussed by his longtime lover and model Jack Walls. Walls recalls his arrival in New York in 1981 after a stint in the military and his initial meeting with Mapplethorpe, a startling figure in leather. Paging through an album of the photographer's sexually charged, sculpturesque portraits, Walls describes Mapplethorpe's methodology, philosophy and relationship to his subjects. Diagnosed with AIDS in October 1986, Mapplethorpe continued shooting but preferred still lifes, things that don't talk back.
