Hello everybody. I'm Skip Alzheimer. Welcome to the Age Geeks Lunchtime streaming show where we watch old 16mimeter films. And that was a film strip from our collection. We have uh before my uh intern finished her stint, uh I had her do 12 to 15 film strips. So, we'll be watching some. Um so, I took the iMac that I had in the mix because it just was having so many problems. It was very, very frustrating. And so I had a Mac Mini around and um I did this uh to kind of stabilize some of the weird behavior I've been experiencing at my end, which sometimes shows up on your end. Um but also just I don't know. I just got really irritated. Like I was like, why is this doing this? This is such a pain in the butt. Okay. Um, so I upgraded uh, and so I'm trying to get some software in this OBS that will allow me to do some color correction um, of the stuff that's coming off the scanner or stuff that we've scanned that we haven't done the the full color correction on so that we get less green faces and more just general whatever things that look a little bit better. But in the meantime, I did get the scanner going. Um, I I'm not capturing at the same time. I'm still trying to figure that part out. Um, and this is the same webcam, by the way. It's just I think it's just being implemented just a scooch better. All right. Anyways, so film scanner, which is right there. We're going to watch this film. Enjoy. Okay. Now, check your neighbors. This is a test of your field of vision. Important to your safety as you walk, ride a bicycle, or drive a car. Important. Driving is a part of our way of life with street and highway traffic a major element of modern-day America. Today, everyone from childhood on is either a pedestrian, a passenger, or a driver. But traffic which once was comparatively light is mounting rapidly every year and a great deal more safety will be necessary to keep accidents from increasing also. How can we get more safety? One answer lies in our nation's schools with their over 30 million enrollment soon to reach 40 million. A vast organized reachable and teachable segment of our population. Centerville is a community alive to its present traffic safety needs. Its eyes on the future. Its safety conscious school administrators provide strong leadership for safety education throughout the school system. Its trained teachers conduct wellplanned safety education programs and the community gives strong support to the entire effort. Soon after enrolling in elementary school, Pete and Emily receive traffic safety instruction. Instruction based on everyday life experiences with opportunity for development of mature judgment. Safety is also a part of the school environment. As Pete and Emily learn to cooperate with the safety patrol, they also learn safe use of the school bus. Nearly 9 million children are carried each school day by this means of transportation with the school system responsible for safe pupil transportation adhering to nationally accepted vehicle and equipment standards also to bus driver selection and training standards. As Pete and Emily graduate into the bicycle using age, they are now becoming good traffic citizens. Then high school and ah that car the ambition of nearly every teenager. Included in Centerville's high school curriculum is a comprehensive course in driver education. One of about 10,000 of our nation's 25,000 high schools today offering some type of driver education. A course that should include classroom and practice driving instruction. teaching the student the role of the motor vehicle in modern life. Responsibilities of the driver as a citizen, motor vehicle laws, safe use of streets and highways, and of course, driving skills and attitudes using one of the 8,000 cars supplied by automobile dealers and manufacturers throughout the nation. so that by the time our students apply for their licenses, they will have received sufficient preparation to permit them to become safe, successful drivers. Do your high schools provide such driver education? If not, it's time to ask why not. The cost of this instruction only about $30 per student. But who can put a price on human lives spared or accidents prevented? Studies show that those with driver education will have something like half as many accidents as those without. And there is a real savings in driver education, too. For today, nearly all insurance companies offer premium reductions for graduates of recognized courses. And some states make grants to local school districts for driver education, aware of its importance in preparing youth for everyday living. Adult education, too, is part of the total program requiring traffic safety courses in more communities for the 35 million American citizens participating in adult education. Today, we desperately need more accredited courses for both high schools and adult classes, and we need more qualified teachers. That is a challenge facing our colleges and universities. Centerville, keeping pace with the problem of the motor age, carries on a comprehensive program. in its junior and senior high schools with suitable courses for adults. If your community is not facing up realistically to the problem of traffic safety, start work today through your PTAs, your civic and service organizations to secure for every child his or her rightful due. Preparation for life in motorized America through safety education. Another important step in the action program for traffic safety. All right. So, it looks like there's still a hiccup with the scanner stopping like I think it's the small hub on the uh 400t reel if you really wanted to know if you're keeping track of what's happening. Um, so this next film was done on uh our other scanner, the laser graphics, and this is what happens when someone when the scanner operator is not paying attention. Uh, and this film had some problems. One of them you'll see like this weird glob on this side, and that is from water damage. Uh, here's some football from 1948. Enjoy. With Gray in motion, the action is fast as Mickey Mardle flips him a lateral and he gallops through the enemy line 20 yd before Oregon cuts him down. It's battle again. He teared through the weboot line and into high gear to outrace the Oregon Lads to a touchdown and a big win 43 to nothing. Gale and Harvard clash at Soldiers Field. There's a Harvard pass. It's grabbed by O'Donnell and the Crimson Back smashes into the sideline. For the moment, Gail is stunned as Ganon goes over for Harvard. It's Ganon again, slamming through the Eli line in a terrific crimson drive. First passes. Ned Hernie takes it and it's a jittery moment for Yale as he fumbles the ball, but Jack Rodrik recovers and old Eli cheers. Now the Bulldogs are on their way. An open attack startles Harvard. Ned Hernie's on the receiving end and he's soon surrounded. Ned Hernie goes through for a touchdown and Yale wins. To the victor go the spoil and the fight continues far into the night. The cadets invade Illinois and bring along a big gun named Bobby Jack Stewart who packs plenty of ammunition. He's off like a bullet for a 55 yd gain before Illinois trips him. More bombing for the cadets and this time Winfield gets going on the longest run of the afternoon with goal in sight. Pierce nudges him out. Illinois's fighting man with the score 26 to nothing against them. Tom Stewart passes to Schmidt. Trouble ahead for the army. Denoi kicks and under it is that fleefooted fellow named Pierce and he pushes through the west pointers for plenty of yardage. Heat. Heat. Take Tradition and excitement go hand in hand as Ro gets away and Harvard triumphs 20-7. >> Yeah. So, uh, that was an example where the the film had problems as you saw at the beginning with the water damage and then it was also warped cuz you could see when it was framed correctly that it was kind of doing this like um, and so yeah, the film had a lot of problems and we could rescan it if I was really interested in 1948 uh, Harvard versus Yale or just the college football from 1948. This is a castle film. I probably have a better copy of it somewhere. Um, but anyways, I just thought you would like to see how the sausage was made. All right, what do we got for you? Well, I've thought it over a lot and I decided that you were right. It's nice of you to say that, Jimmy. >> I mean it. Honest. >> No law against us being friends, is there? >> No. I'd like that. >> Jimmy, what made you change your mind? I mean, about us and everything. >> Well, it's kind of hard to say this, but um I think I was pressuring you so I could prove something to myself. you know, be a big man. Can you understand that? >> Yeah, I think so. >> You know, there's this guy down where I work. Got himself into one hell of a hassle with this girl he was going with. Sure glad I wasn't him. >> So, >> well, after hearing his story, you know, it seemed to me that you were sort of sensible about not wanting to risk getting into all that. >> You can say that again. I got a lot of places I want to go. I got a lot of things I want to do. And the way I see it, sex can wait until I'm ready for it. Uh so the filmmakers who made these it's the I think it's the float floatas f l o e t h e that's a couple and they made some other films that centron distributed one of them was all my tomorrows which uh and the day I died two films which were about alcohol uh abuse and um one has a girl who basically falls into a coma and is talking throughout the entire thing and the other is uh someone who's dead. He's already dead because he drank too much and crashed. So um this film is much more positive um and it also gives different scenarios. So, there you go.
