Hello everybody. I'm Skip Alzheimer. Welcome to the AV Geeks Lunchtime streaming show where we watch old 16 mm films and sometimes we watch uh 35mm film strips. Um and somebody in the comments said, "Yeah, I I think we should have a beep." Um, you know, technically silent film strips don't have audio recordings with beeps that they are captioned and kids, adults read the caption and then when they're done, then you move advance it. So, it's it's a very easy way for me to also say that putting beeps that are in conjunction with the one that's being turned is very hard. It takes a lot of time uh to do that because I've done it. Um and it just it was it didn't feel right. So, I'm going to air on um not doing that for now, but I don't know, maybe at some point we'll figure it out. But uh today's Memorial Day in the United States. Um, traditionally I've shown films about um fallen um armed forces folks, people um pilots, soldiers, sailors, etc. Um, and I've shown them enough times that I feel like I don't need to show them again. Um, and I actually kind of did a deep dive on the National Archives to see if I could find some more Memorial Day stuff, and it was all silent footage of cemeteries. And so I don't want to make light of Memorial Day and why it's important. Um, but yeah, it I haven't found that film yet that I'm like, "Oh, I haven't shown this yet, and this is totally appropriate for Memorial Day." because I've shown the other ones many many times cuz we've done this for I don't know 6 years coming up yeah past 6 years um so I apologize to that no offense um to those who lost people uh in the military because they sacrificed a lot my all the men in my family um not my generation lower but father uncle grandfathers all served in the milit military and all had stories about people who died uh and so that's pretty serious um and the sacrifice that they they gave. So honor those those folks who fell and uh in the meantime Memorial Day means something different. It means for some people it's time to buy a new mattress uh or buy things on sale, appliances. Um but for others it's uh having a picnic. And I think that having a picnic, a a joyous, carefree picnic is one of the things that people fought for and are fighting for is the freedom to have a picnic. Uh I've shown this film a couple of times and I was pulling multiple uh films. Uh and I got this working on the scanner. Uh this was a test that I I digitized. So I did this earlier, but um I have like six copies of this film. So enjoy picnic. Heat. Heat. Won't you come with us today? We're going on a picnic. Won't you come with us and play? We're going on a picnic. Picnics are a lot of fun in the country, in the sun. Leave a city for a day. Have some fun. The country, a picnic on a sunny day. Green grass grows upon the ground where we have our picnic. We like to play upon the grass where we have our picnic. It's nice to kneel upon the grass. To smell and touch and feel the grass. Grass is green and green is the color. Green is the color of the trees. Green is the color of summer leaves. While mom and dad prepare the food, we look for things to find. The woods are filled with animals and many things to find. Caterpillars, bugs, and bees living in the forest. Perhaps we'll find a nest of eggs. Hidden in the forest. Find things in the forest. Animals live all around. Where we have our picnic, a frog can easily be found. where we have our picnic. Frogs are small green animals that live around the water. Turtles like to live here, too, with grass and trees and water. Turtles like the water. Picnic lunch is almost done. The fire is burning brightly. Some foods cooked crusty brown. Others we cook lightly. Fire cooks all our food. You see, without fire, picnics could not be. It cooks because it's very hot. Hot does things that cold cannot. Fire is very, very hot. Picnic lunch is ready now. It's time to have our picnic. Eating food that's fun to eat. It's time to have our picnic. to eat can be a lot of fun, especially on a hot dog bun. Drink can be a pleasure, too. Drink is something that we do when we're thirsty through and through. Heat. Heat. Time to pack our picnic things and drive back to the city. Clean the table. Pick up trash. Keep the country pretty for other little boys and girls to come and have a picnic. A picnic just as you and I. And it's time to say goodbye. And it's time to say goodbye. Goodbye. So Jim Burroughs, uh, songwriter did a lot of educational films. Um, but he didn't do this one, I don't think. Uh, we're going to actually use the scanner today. Um, and see if it works. Uh, here we go. This is another film with a p a picnic. So, we're watching films about picnics because some people where it's not raining are on a picnic. Enjoy. Use this leader to focus the picture and adjust the sound volume. The film will then be ready for correct projection. Oh, come on, Mr. Punch. Get to work. Get to work. I can't. >> You can't? Why not? I'm tired. I don't have enough energy to work. Oh, come on. Get to work. I'm too tired. No, you're not. Yes, I am. No, you're not. Yes, I am. Five blind mice. Five blind mice. See how they run. See, that's three blind mice. It is eight blind mice. Eight blind mice. See, eight blind mice. >> Sure. Your three and my five make eight, right? >> Oh, forget it. Okay. Two blind mice. Two. Hey, what's that? Oh, that's easy. Those are boys and girls. I know that, but they're watching a puppet show. Hey. Yeah. Can we watch Two Harp? Can we? Huh? Sure. Now, be quiet so we can hear. >> And I'm tired of being tired. I'm going to get some energy. >> Yummy lollipop. >> No wonder you're always tired, Mr. Pudge. You don't eat right. >> Oh, sure I do. I'll take big bites and I'll chew slowly. >> I don't mean that, Mr. Punch. You don't eat the kinds of foods that give you pep and energy. >> You mean uh eat right uh feel right? >> Sure. Eat good, feel good. Now, let me take this old sticky thing away and get you some yummy milk. Wow. Thank you, Judy, my love. I'll feel great. Oh, wow. Oh, that's wonderful. That's the way to eat, right? Goodbye, boys and girls. Goodbye. >> Goodbye, love. >> Goodbye, love. >> Gee, hive. Seeing that candy makes me hungry. >> Me, too. Hey, it looks like some of those boys and girls are getting ready to eat lunch. Let's follow them. >> Okay. Hi. >> Miss Burton, you're a teacher. Is it true what those puppets said? It sure is. Eating the right foods helps you grow. It makes your bones and teeth strong, makes your hair shiny, and it gives you energy. >> How can what you eat give you energy? >> Well, the body's like a machine, and machines need fuel. But not just any kind of fuel. >> Wowee. Is that really true, Harve? >> Sure. She means eat lots of candy. Are you sure, Hive? >> Sure, I'm sure. >> The main thing is that you get different kinds of the right foods so your body will be strong and healthy. >> How can we do that? >> By eating something every day from each of the four food groups. >> What's a food group? >> The four food groups. What are they again, Hug? Everybody knows that one is candy, two is cake, three is cookies, and four is anything that comes in a can like this. >> Gee, hub, you sure are smart. >> I know. >> We need several different kinds of food to be healthy. Now, there are four basic foods that we call food groups. One group is called the meat protein group. Beans and peanut butter are also in this group. These foods help you to grow. Another is the vegetable and fruit group. We need several servings of these foods every day. Another is the milk group. Here you will find milk and all the products made out of milk like cheese and yogurt and ice cream. Children need two or three cups of milk every day. The fourth group is breads and cereals. The foods in this group are made from grains like wheat, oats, and rice. They give us energy. Let's look at some of your lunches. You'll see that most of you have something from each food group. >> Look at mine. I got an egg salad sandwich. >> Good. The eggs are from the meat protein group and the bread is from the bread cereal group >> and a pear. That's from the fruit and vegetable group. >> And I've got milk to drink. >> Very good. >> I have a tuna fish salad. That's the meat group. >> And the bread and cereal group. >> And an apple from the fruit and vegetable group and milk and cookies, too. Good. >> Look at mine, everybody. >> What kind is it? >> A candy sandwich. I made it myself. Well, we candy sandwich. >> Well, I see you also have a piece of chicken, some crackers, carrot sticks, and milk. So, I guess a little piece of candy will be all right. >> What's wrong with candy? >> Well, most sweet things like candy aren't really very good foods. But if you do eat them, eat them after your regular meal so you don't spoil your appetite. Candy and other things with sugar are also bad for your teeth. >> Yes, you can get cavities and maybe a toothache. >> Cavities? Gee, Harve, humans sure have a lot to remember. >> Yeah, I'm glad I'm not a human. Come on. All that food made me hungry. >> Me, too, Harve. Be careful about eating too much candy. Fee, not me. I think you're wrong, Harve. This cheese sandwich on whole grain bread sure is good. And I got some milk and an apple. I feel stronger already. Ah, humans just think they know it all. But Harve, those boys and girls had good lunches. They want to grow big and strong. Want to bet? They'll forget all about eating right when they get their afternoon snack. I'll prove it. You'll see. >> Okay, Harve. But I think you're wrong. >> Now you'll see what I mean. They'll buy all kinds of sweet things. But Harve, a lot of things that are good for you taste good, too. >> Yeah, but they won't buy them. You'll see them, right? >> I'm not so sure, Hive. >> Hi, kids. What'd you like to have today? >> Hi, I'll have a cola. >> Cola. Okay. >> Aha. I told you he wouldn't remember. Eating the right food helps you to grow. It helps you to be strong and it helps give you energy to work and play. >> Hey, wait. I'll have an apple juice instead. >> Sure. >> Apple juice. Terrific. I told you. Yeah. But wait. See that girl? She's going to get a nice big sweet roll and all those cavities. Look, she's changed her mind. She's getting a banana instead. Rats. Look at those two boys. Yeah, now you'll see. Hey, boys. Think big and strong and healthy. Remember the four food group. Look hard. They both got sacks of nuts. That's healthy. Rats again. And that girl is getting an apple. That's good. Double rats. Look, she's buying cheese and crackers. Oh, triple rats. >> I still don't believe eating those four food groups will make you big and strong. You've been eating them, Marv. They don't really help you, do they? Marv. Marv. What do you think, Marv? Hey. Hey. That's the annoying thing that I forgot about the scanner is that it sometimes it will just say like, you know what, I'm going to stop. Um, that's very frustrating. Um, we'll we'll keep trying to figure it out. I updated some software, so we'll see what happened. In the meantime, let's watch a film about a picnic. Enjoy. picnic mix. Take one. Heat. Heat. Heat. Hey. Hey. Hey. Woo! Woo! Woo! Woo! Woo! Woo! Woo! Woo! Woo! Heat. Heat. Welcome. Yeah. Woo. There we go. Heat. Heat. Hello. Hello. Hello. Hello. Smelling you. You You want to stop? Hey. All right. It was a Weston Woods and Weston Wood films are mostly based on children's books. And early on they would do this thing called uh iconographic films where they would basically like shoot an illustration from the book and then they would pan or they would jiggle the camera or zoom in, zoom out. Um but then they actually started hiring animators and uh so pretty great. Okay, so uh today is Memorial Day. We uh respect and we wish um that uh the lives lost in the name of freedom uh were not for um were not wasted that I don't know what I was saying there but basically we have freedoms because people died. I don't want them to die, but they died and so let's uh not take what they did for granted. Does that make sense? That being said, uh so we've been watching films about picnics today and um this is the one of the most notorious films I have about picnics. Enjoy. Happy. This story is about 10 rather close relations of ours who seem to get into almost exactly the same kind of trouble we do. All 10 of these jolly characters lived in the same neighborhood and were all good friends. Uh, generally speaking, each of them had a bicycle and each took care of his bicycle in exactly the way that he took care of himself. One day they held a group think and decided to have a picnic in a little park just nine blocks away. Now, that doesn't sound far, but a lot can happen in nine blocks, right? Well, sound off out there, I said. Right. Right. So, they all ran home and made themselves sandwiches. I know that doesn't sound too likely, but of course, they're not quite human. Then, they hurried back, all ready to go. Now, one of the 10 was a rather hungry type. His name was Slim Jim McCupney, and his picnic lunch was what you might call a portable banquet. Right. Right. Slim knew that his big sack would be hard to handle, so he asked Orville Slump if he'd carry it for him. Orville had a basket on the rear of his bike. He was a good sort, and he answered, "Okay." Some of the others noticed this and asked him if he'd carry theirs, too. Orville answered graciously, "Well, I guess so." And naturally, everybody else did the same until Orville's rear basket looked like a chuck wagon. At last they were ready to go, and at a given signal they went. Now this is Ruthie Toot Jasperson. He had the newest bike in the bunch and he was as proud of it as he could be. He made it a point to get in the lead and there he intended to stay. It would seem that Rudy Toot was a slam bang go-getter headed for big things in life. Right. Right. But when you have to be first all the time, there are a few things you find you don't have time for. Such things as making hand signals. Oh, he knew very well that bike riders are supposed to signal just like auto drivers. Hand down for slow or stop. Hand up for right turn, hand straight out for left turn. But pretty soon he began to feel silly making so many signals to stay out in front. So he skipped one to rest his poor old tired arm. Just one signal once. At this point, Rudy to Chasperson left the party. This charming little thing was actually christened Tinkerbell McDilling Fitty. She's a sweet and lovely girl, but she has a rather poor memory. Sometimes she forgets to brush her teeth. Sometimes she leaves homework at home, and sometimes she forgets to look at traffic signals. Now, she knows that she should she knows that she should ride just like auto drivers drive. But she's so busy being happy all the time that her little thoughts tend to wander. And oh dear, dear. They're wandering again. Here she goes. Exit. Tinker Bell McDilling City. She forgot now and then. Now, let me introduce Philip Flugal. He's a star athlete, the president of his class, an honor student, and he has the handsomest profile in school. Just look at it, will you? Now, Flug, as his friends call him, has one little flaw in his character. He is very easily bored. Right now he's asking himself why everyone has to go up this side of the street. It's so sy. So proving that even a class president can make mistakes, he decided to ride against traffic. Oh, he knows that auto drivers never do this and that he should follow the very same traffic rules. But he's in the mood to do something different. Anyway, there are no policemen around to see him. Philip Flugal is no longer bored. You've probably wondered about this fellow on foot. Well, his name is Mosby Pomegranate. He is splendid in dramatics, but he works so hard memorizing his lines that he doesn't get around to a lot of other things. He never made it down to register his bike and get a license for it. He knows very well that a license makes it easy to find out who he is if he's in an accident and makes the bike easy to trace if it's lost or stolen. That's his trouble. Last week, while he was rehearsing the lead in King Kong, someone rode off with his bike. He went to the police, but of course, they couldn't help him since it had no license or registration. He stomped out of the police station angrily, and he's been stomping ever since. Farewell Mosby pomegranate, victim of fallen arches. If you look carefully, you'll see Triggby Fipps. He's the smaller one in Eclipse trying to make that bike go. His passenger is an old friend of ours, Slim Jim McGuffney. Slim Jim's bike recently collapsed from the effects of his diet. And Trigby, being a nice little fellow, agreed to ride him. Now, he knows that no auto driver would drive with a passenger in his lap. He also knows that you can't see ahead very well with someone on the handlebars and that you can't control the bike well and that you can't make signals either. Furthermore, it is tiring. Right. Right. So long, fellas. There seems to be a flaw in the buddy system. Meet Nelly Swbach. She's as nice as can be on foot, but when she gets on that bike, sweet Nelly becomes terribly impatient with other people's driving. Although there are only a few left now, she's having trouble sharing the street with them. So Melbbert is about to make a decision she'd never make if she weren't angry. There she goes. There she goes. She knows that riding on the sidewalk isn't allowed in her city and many others, and that even where it is, pedestrians always have the right away. But Nel's upset, and she'd like to know just one good reason why she shouldn't take over the sidewalk all to herself. Melbbert Swebark got her one good reason. Those noises you hear come from the transportation of Filbert Bagel. Filbert hates his old bike. He refuses to take care of it because his folks will probably give him a new one for his birthday. He can't see any reason for taking care of a heap of junk, even if he made it that way himself. He will in a moment, though. You see, he doesn't know it. But he'll find out that there's not a shred of a break left. Now, Filbert would be the first to agree that if it's worth writing, it's worth taking care of. Right. Right. Quickly meet Stannislaw Hickenbottom while you can. He's a nice boy, but he won't be with us long. You are now looking straight at Stannislaw Higenbottom. He has neither lights nor reflectors. Dennis Law just wasn't quite bright enough. All of which leave Orville. He'll get fat. All right. And here's why he ended up with all these groceries that he doesn't really want. This was Rudy to Jasperson. Maybe you remember why he didn't make the picnic. He didn't signal just once. Do you recall Tinkerbell McDilling Fiddy? She forgot to watch the signals just once. And good old Phil Flugal. He rode up the wrong side of the street once. Mosby Pomegranate was the walking one. He didn't get around to registering his bike and getting a license. It would have taken him only a few minutes. The small one was Triggby Fipps and his passenger was Slim Jim McGuffney. They rode double into trouble. Who could forget Nel Swagach? She wanted to know one good reason why the sidewalks didn't belong to her. Then there was Filbert Bagel. He didn't take care of his brakes, so they didn't take care of him. And good old Stannis Law Higenbottom. No lights, no reflector, no Stannislaw. So that's why all the slump is picnicking alone today. He watched the signals. He obeyed traffic signs. He made hand signals. He rode alone. He stayed on the right side of the street. Got a license. Rode just like auto drivers drive and kept the brakes and all in good condition. And he got fat. Of course, it was very lonely, but not as lonely as this. But then, as anyone can plainly see, he wasn't a monkey. Right? Now, that sounds as if you really mean it. Right. Thank you, Kevin, for donating uh for that. Um, and he uh asked if there's a possibility we could make get monkey masks uh as part of the AV Geeks merch. Uh, that's a good question. Um, that would take a lot of work. A lot of work. Right now, today I'm I'm working on this. I'm working on a Billy. I got three Billies this weekend and now I'm putting them together so they can store hard drives. Hard drives. That's That's what we do here. We build shelves for films. We build shelves for hard drives and occasionally for staplers, but that's another story. Um, thanks for watching today. Um, yeah, honor those who died for your freedoms and don't take them lightly. Don't take them for granted. Uh, that's my message. uh and those who served, veterans, uh support them as well. Um they gave a lot and uh we should support them. Um anyways, uh let's talk tomorrow. Um I'm going to uh try to figure out what page I'm on here and uh work with a hammer and with a screwdriver and try to assemble this book bookshelf. Uh take care and we will see you tomorrow.
