Examines dependence from a wide variety of aspects and proposes relationships with natural rhythms, early sensory stimulation, REMs and dreaming, and conception and gestation. Examines possible causal theories along with societal factors which might explain late life dependence. Uses a nude, pregnant woman as a referent to discuss the influence of parental attitudes during conception, the mother's attitudes and habits during gestation, and the personal and socio-economic appropriateness of the pregnancy. Suggests that deprivation during the oral and anal phase of the infant's development can have an influence on later dependencies and cites that the loss of such societal stabilizers as beliefs in church, government, education, and the work ethic may be causing dependency problems among adults.
