Description: . Defines heat; traces the history of the study of heat; and explains some of the physical effects heat has on matter. Uses animation to describe the new rejected caloric theory. Count Rumford's experiments which disproved this theory, and Joule's demonstration of the mechanical equivalent of heat. A special apparatus used to show the interrelations of temperature, pressure, and volume in the kinetic theory of heat. Melting points of crystalline and non-crystalline substances are discussed; vaporization and liquification are related to thermal energy; and the nature of temperature and heat are contrasted. Manufacturing of mercury thermometers is highlighted.
