beauty and charm of this then new land was beyond the vision of these sturdy Pioneers whose Ox teams wore deep the original Oregon Trail [Music] today there is a new Oregon Trail a trail of modern paved highways leading to Beauty spots of unsurpassed Ranger go now the hardships and dangers of the pioneer days the old ill is a member but the new Oregon Trail a network of modded highways opens to the worst Scenic Wonderland where one of courteous and then State Police got safety on Oregon's highways they are always glad to assist one in trouble or help with information lifting Skyward in northeastern Oregon are the forest Ted walawa mountains presenting nature at her best Mountain Lakes dot the region like shimmering Jewels predatory home of the Nez Perce Indians who named it Valley of Winding Waters second the trail invites and gave me trout await those willing to climb into the saddle on the back of a sure-footed horse [Applause] down from the mountains to salila Falls near The Dalles Indians enjoying their treaty rights and catching salmon by spear and dipnet just beyond the city of Portland along the Columbia River Highway Multnomah Falls a beautiful torrent of water plunges headlong down a share Cliff 620 feet hist bypassing winds the spray spread to gossamer Mist in Rainbow great ribbons dancing down the Moss carpeted walls to a pool below Multnomah is the queen of 11 similar Falls that greet the eye within a distance of 11 miles here is another wakina Falls at Crown Point stands the Vista house a memorial to Oregon pioneers the beauty of the Columbia Gorge and pulls itself man's men's culture lends variety and enchantment at Mitchell Point tunnel above the Broad Columbia [Music] but an even greater Conquest Wang surely never dreamed of by the Intrepid Lewis and Clark when in 1805 their exploring Eyes First beheld The Mighty Columbia River is Bonneville Dam built by the government at a cost of some 73 million dollars to provide Power production and navigation in Columbia Gorge foreign [Music] a few more miles along the Columbia River Highway more glimpses of rare Beauty then Portland the city of roses a modern industrial Seaport with Beach mountain and lake resorts within a few hours drive of the city The Rose Festival held in June of each year is World Famous as an unsurpassed pageant of flowers thank you Fleet Week in Portland brings prefer a canoe what's more fun than a picnic and here's the very spot shampooing State Park site of the Pacific coast first American Commonwealth and speaking of state parks Oregon has scored to them here's beautiful North Falls and South Falls both in Silver Creek Falls State Park for those who admire architectural Beauty the state capitol building at Salem is a poem in Marvel [Music] coming back to the Columbia highway we climbed to clats of Crest which gives a panoramic view of the mighty Colombia and surrounding world of evergreens thank you [Music] here at Astoria when the salmon are running is something rare to witness [Music] men who go down to the sea in small but sturdy boats to gather the silver horde of salmon make our story of their home Port Astoria is a city rich in romantic history remembering its past and honoring its founder John Jacob Aster with a column of impressive design at Astoria the Columbia River Highway joins with the Oregon Coast Highway the world's most majestic Ocean Road paralleling the Pacific for 400 miles [Music] at gearheart clam digging When the tide is low offers both Sport and a rare table treat on the beach at Seaside might be the their fishing catch an interesting diversion enjoyed by many who frequent Oregon's beaches is a hunt for agates which are plentiful when Nightfall comes the beach still holds its charm Driftwood fires provide fun and lots of conflict and there's no end to the supply of fuel here north of Florence herds of sea lions live on shawl edges and congregate in caves beneath the highway Oregon's coastline is a region of state parks the Jesse M Honeyman Memorial Park near Florence is typical of these playgrounds Choice Scenic historic and recreational areas have been set aside by the state in many sections they are developed and supervised by the state highway Commission at Reedsport the highway branches Inland along the Umpqua River a beautiful region the Umpqua affords some of the finest fishing in Oregon Artistry and Beauty as well as utility are built into Oregon's Bridges and they are toll-free to the world [Music] Bridge is a large cantilever type structure with lovely landscape plazas at Egypt as the coastline approaches its extreme southern end an impressive array of offshore rock formations greet the eye at Bandon these huge rock towers are known as sea stats farther down the coast at Gold Beach near the mouth of the Rogue River is a famous salmon fishing ground yeah trolling for these gaming Fighters brings rare and exciting sport [Music] running at the Lower Road by high-powered motorboats especially built to overcome Roaring Rapids is an adventure this stream is Fame for the steelhead fly fishing in the heart of The Siskiyou mountains are the Oregon Caves called the marble halls of Oregon in Winding corridors and countless Chambers are weird but Majestic creations few caverns of the world contain more fantastic interest than the famous ghost chamber Paradise Lost King's Palace or Dante's Inferno [Music] deer have become exceedingly tame in the Federal Reserve surrounding the caves in southern Oregon the new highway over the siskiyous passes through Ashland which offers among its attractions beautiful Lithia Park foreign this road passing through regions of Robert Granger is typical of the new modern highways Oregon is building and Oregon's Highway Department sees that there is a minimum of delay and virtually no detours to Mar the enjoyment of the state's motoring guests on the way to Crater Lake Maya left a while often as straight as an arrow leads through the centered coolness of Timberlands Cascades of tumbling water such as Mill Creek Falls at an ever-increasing charm to the trip and here is the Rogue River near its birthplace rugged mountains Diamond Lake is a natural spawning round for these famous rainbow trout [Music] a fisherman's dream come true trout two to 15 pounds fighting rainbows just waiting for that fly or spinner in the same Cascade Mountains region beautiful Crescent Lake attracts thousands to summer homes and cows and like Odell Lake not far away provides all the joys of a real vacation [Music] summer day what pleasure could Excel this past time on Elk Lake foreign ER and East Lake southeast of Bend are both Choice playground areas [Music] snow-capped mountain peaks are always alluring and the Three Sisters stand like white Sentinels over this land of living glaciers and primitive forests their majesty and ruggedness lure many to join a pack train trip on Oregon's famous Skyline Trail close to 400 miles long nearly 6 million Acres of national forest are set aside in the Cascade Mountains of Oregon and this state has one-fifth of the standing Timber of the nation this McKenzie river region holds an irresistible appeal for sportsmen and those who prefer an outdoors fresh and unspoiled here is a rushing torrent white water everywhere Rapids that swirl and race this is truly one of the West's greatest rainbow trout streams it's a real battle fighting the stream testing the skill and endurance of any man with Rod and creole a magnet for world famous fishermen fisherman through the pine country of the Cascade Mountains flows the matolius river a quiet stream with quaint water wheels pumping its Crystal cold water to summer homes along its Bank innumerable small streams in this section provide the fly fisherman with sports Supreme the Deschutes River near Ben presents a picture that will excite the brush of any artist when it comes to camping in the Wilds nothing can surpass the United States Forest campsites with their natural settings and unexpected comforts Mount Jefferson one of Oregon's Mighty snow plaid Peaks is in the heart of a gorgeous Recreation land one of Oregon's towering glories is snow Crown Mount Hood recognized as a skier's Utopia and reached over the famous Mount Hood Loop Highway Mount Hood offers all the Thrills any alpinest cares to see many prefer to enjoy the Mountain's Beauty following winding Trails Australia's sure-footed horse high up Mount Hood's lofty slope is famous Timberline Lodge a government-built resort Mount Hood raises its Dome high above miles of apple orchards few people think of Oregon when geysers are mentioned but here's one near Lakeview with wild geese swimming on its warm Waters in the same South Central section of the state is the Heart Mountain game Refuge habitat of thousands of baseball Antelope protected by government wardens they roam an ever-increasing herds in the malheur bird refuge the government is performing a similar service for Oregon's migratory feathered visitors on Klamath Lake vast lots of pelicans Northwest from Dayville the highway passes the John Day parcel bed tomb of prehistoric animals here once Rome rhinoceros elephant and the dawn hordes while Oregon is interested in its prehistoric era it lays more stress on its Pioneer period the spirit of the Old West which is that romance is fostered on the many so-called dude ranchers which dot Eastern Oregon remember foreign still roam Oregon ranges near Lakeview and real cowboys ride heard much as they did in the days of the early West Spirit of the old Oregon Trail era that west of a day now gone is kept alive at the Pendleton Roundup each September here is a spectacle unrivaled anywhere in the land real
