[music] [music] [music] [music] These are the boys and [music] girls who looked around and littered met their [music] view and they saw what they could do. [music] They went to work because [singing] they knew that someone had Look [music] around. Look [singing] around. You may find litter, too. [music] Look around. Look around. See what you [music] can do. [music] >> [music] [music] >> Look around. Look around. See what you [music] can do. These boys and girls looked around and built a litter [music] monster to show everyone how ugly litter can be. But where did the [music] litter come from? Maybe we can find out if we go backward in time. [music] [music] Where does litter come from? It comes from people. People like you and me. But what does it [music] matter if there is litter? Why should we be concerned? Well, for one thing, [music] litter is ugly. Litter is also unsanitary. Rodents [music] and flies can feed on it, and rodents and flies spread disease. [music] Litter is also dangerous. [music] >> [music] >> Cleaning up litter from public and private [music] property costs the American people more than a billion dollars every year. [music] Imagine how much better this money could be used for medical [music] research for better homes for more people or for scientific exploration. But still we have litter. [music] The problem is so serious that youth groups in all parts of the country are constantly having anti-litter [music] programs. But you don't have to belong to a club to do something about the litter problem. [music] >> [music] >> Catching [music] an ugly piece of litter instead of a big fish can be very [music] disappointing. When Larry [music] looked around and saw all the litter, he was very unhappy about how ugly the lake had become. And he [music] decided to do something about it. Each good citizen can do [music] something about the litter problem. Many times it takes only one person like Larry who got his class at school to organize a cleanup [music] campaign. This is a place where they [music] looked around and discern their view. This is a place [music] where they looked around and saw what they could do. >> [music] >> Look around. [music] Look around. You may find letter two. [music] Look around. Look around. See what you [music] can do. >> Litter barrels [music] will help keep this park clean. and the park department has agreed to keep them empty. And all this happened [music] because one person looked around and did what he could do. [music] [music] The vacant lots in many towns and cities have become dumping grounds for ugly, dangerous litter. >> [music] [music] [music] >> These boys looked around [music] and decided to clean up the lock so that when the sanitation truck came by, the [music] litter could be hauled away. [music] >> [music] [music] >> Hey. [music] [music] Hey. >> [music] [music] [music] >> There are some [music] people who actually use our roadsides and fields for dumping grounds. They don't care what kind of mess they make or what harm [music] their litter can cause. An old crate can be a dangerous trap. [music] [music] A calf [music] with its leg caught and bleeding is a sad thing. While Bonnie waited for help to come, she looked around. [music] Look around. Look around. [music] See what you can do. >> [music] >> Bonnie told her club about what they had found, and the club decided to do something about it. [music] [music] >> [music] >> As part of their anti-litter program, the boyard calf to everyone [music] at the rodeo. [music] One person can do a lot by just looking [music] around and doing something about it. One of the most important [music] parts of the anti-litter program is litter prevention. Besides [music] looking around, these boys and girls took pictures of the litter in their schoolyard. >> [music] [music] >> They used the pictures to show the ugliness of litter for the start of their [music] anti-litter campaign. When the teacher [music] asked the class what could be done about the litter problem, almost everyone had [music] an idea. For example, posters helped [music] to remind people not to litter. >> [music] [music] [music] >> Another good way to help prevent littering is to make and distribute litter bags. [music] >> [music] [music] >> Reminding people not to litter is very important. These [music] girls had their neighbors sign an anti-litter pledge. >> [music] [music] [music] [music] [music] >> Litter prevention can also be fun. [music] >> [music] [music] >> Hello, sir. Do you have any litter for me today? I'm hungry for litter. It's me, the hungry litter basket. Haven't you ever seen a talking litter basket before? [laughter] >> Hello there, young man. I'm your talking litter basket. There's a piece of litter in the street. Would you feed me, please? Yum, yum. That was good. Thank you. >> Thank you for helping to keep our street clean. >> [music] >> Litter prevention is very important and everyone can help. Always keep a litter bag [music] in the car. Put your litter in the litter baskets. [music] If you don't see one, take your litter home with you. [music] Yes, litter can be prevented in many ways, but someone [music] has to do it.
