The Colours of my father, a portrait of Sam Borenstein

To fashion this intimate portrait of her painter father, Joyce Boreinstein meshed innovative animation techniques with archival material, live action footage and photographs. Sam Borenstein's vibrant canvases come to life as friends and relatives chart his boyhood in war-torn Lithuania, his odyssey to Canada to escape anti-Semitism in his homeland and struggles to remain an artist while supporting a wife and family. To his daughter, Sam Borenstein was a magician who could make fabulous shapes and colors appear, transforming an ordinary village into a scene of unbounded energy.
