Description: In 1978, Richard Nixon chose Leslie County, Kentucky for his first public appearance since resigning the Presidency. Footage of his visit introduces this study of grassroots politics in the small mountain jurisdiction where residents have been pulling the big lever for the Republicans since the Civil War. This documentary explores party loyalty and precinct-level politics as it focuses on the career of the incumbent County Judge-Executive, the man who invited Nixon to the county and subsequently, sought re-election despite a federal conviction of vote fraud conspiracy. As the candidates go in search of votes, the constituents comment on the election tactics, which reveal an intricate mix of culture, history and tradition.
