Description: On New Year's Eve, 1899, the Raffertys, Wheelers, and Lathrops each look back on their lives and unrealized dreams and confront the appraoching new century with speculation and renewed hope. Teddy Wheeler, no longer interested in the problems of the poor, looks on the new capitalism of big business as a fast way of making money. James Lathrop has abandoned his dreams and is content to make contracts for building projects. Sarah Lathrop adamantly pursues her photojournalism career. Stephen Rafferty has chosen a cautious life, seeking stability for his wife and five children. As the year ends, the Spanish-American War and the growth of industrial organizations have left their marks on the three families.
