many believe that the Romantic days of sail are gone the days of Wooden Ships and Iron Men but the same salty Instinct that made America famed for her clipper ships is alive today in small ships of course but no less Salty The Art of sailing is not lost but is a vastly improved art racing interest mounts to Fever heat wherever there's a fleet of yachs all exactly alike in a so-called one design class such as these Internationals all alike in every detail except one the skill of the skipper who gets in front of the fleet and stays there another popular class The Atlantics come downwind with spiners now we are aboard a smaller Sloop exactly like number one just turning a mark of the course number 17 gets around ahead of us and we drive hard to reach the boy the Lee rail is buried and we're going through the water like a motorboat another competitor threatens to catch up here's number 17 Close to lur excitement and thrills are crowded into every minute in this sort of racing for The Spectators and for the sailors who test their skill and knowledge there's a boat we're trying to catch and fighting for every fraction of speed we can't win but we've had fun down around Australia they go in for racing dingies with so much sail it takes a lot of skill to keep them from capsizing in almost every race one of them imitates a submarine only an expert crew finishes a race and even off before the win with spinner cassette they can roll over there's never a dull moment in these boats off our New England coast the last race of the fishing Schooners is still a lively Topic in the tler fleet the gerud Elbo of gluster and the blue no of Canada fighted out for the codfish Championship they drive the big Schooners and they go like racing [Music] Yachts there's the t-bo coming up the stern her crew is setting a big fisherman stacil they'd willingly blow the sticks out of her to win down in Florida they have a novel sport yes they sailboats on Wheels lined up for a race and they're off with pushing permitted at the start now they're really moving at a fair turn of speed that peaceful sleeper better look out oops never touched him he's coming back to try it again now he's awake the sand Yachts really can go it takes driving skill in sailing knoow or this is what can happen and sometimes they have a smash up but they can always get out and walk as an all other yacht racing it's skill and class that tells and here's the winner now this isn't yacht racing but it is a race and here's the fellow who must be beaten these boys don't have to be told that it's time to get ashore and [Music] fast the big hunger crazed Maneater needs only to bump the boat and he'll have a meal in fact three meals they're expert at sculling a trick with an ore that many boatmen never learned and the swish of the blade in the water is the only thing that makes the monster hold off his attack now they're close and they make it just in time United States Coast Guard Cadets man the yards of the Joseph Conrad on a training cruise to learn seamanship in the greatest School the decks of a Square rigger originally a Danish training ship and then a private yacht the Conrad is rigged with single topsil Crossing free Royals here's one of the reasons men of the United States Coast Guard have to be real seamen in fair weather or foul a motor surfboat must get out to isolated tilok Rock on the Oregon coast to relieve the lighthouse Keepers or or bring supplies they maneuver the boat to the Le side of the Rocks but even here it's impossible to land so it preaches boy is Lord and the man is lifted up to the top of the cliff high above the [Applause] Sea and the only way a man can be taken off the Rock is in the same manner it's merely a routine Duty for these men of the Coast Guard the job is finished all with the journey ashore but this is no problem Florida again and one of the big mid-winter yachting events is the race for cruising Wind Jammers from St Petersburg to Havana here they are soon after the start strung out down the Florida West Coast where the Spanish Buccaneers sailed these modern yachtsmen could show them plenty not only in speed but in every seagoing science navigation is important in these races as well as the use of every kite in the sail Locker that spars and rigan will carry there's a playful pair of porpuses that seem to regard the white-winged yacht as a friendly companion and they s under the balloon jib for Miles a Navy Patrol plane comes up the stern to check on the various contestants in the race and identifies them by something unforeseen happens but that's the secret of the great interest in this red blooded sport anything can happen in a yacht race and it usually does [Music] Havana isn't far away now like a ghost of a long forgotten day a graceful Square rigger passes her modern sisters of sale there's a steamer coming from Havas looming ahead Maro Castle the finish of the race and of what importance is
