Description: Investigates the use of electroconvulsive shock therapy (ECT) for the treatment of severe depression in the 20-30% of cases that do not respond to drugs or other treatment. Observes a treatment session and interviews four patients, three of whom have been helped by this form of treatment and one who is among the 10% of patients for whom it is not effective. Indicates that most patients are women over 40, that the mortality rate is very low, and that the major risk is memory loss, though long term research on cognitive functioning indicates no prolonged or permanent brain damage from ECT.
