Description: The NDP experienced many highs and lows from 1962-1988. At the party's zenith, it briefly held the balance of power at the federal level. But union support was not as substantial as leaders had anticipated and the NDP and CLC had frequent fallings out. What half-hearted support unions did provide resulted in the NDP's being tarnished by their negative public image. Despite major campaigning by the CLC on behalf of the NDP from 1979-1988, national party support was minimal and Edward Broadbent stepped down as leader in 1988.
