Complete Record: We continue with a MS of the same older man (John Grierson) as he speaks about another film of his that focuses on the postal service via trains (Royal Mail). LS, pans over the Scottish countryside. A male voice recites a poem about the postal trains as we see more landscape shots from the train. LS of the train yard. The man talks about another film that is about ships. It opens with different shots of a large ship being launched into the water, a huge chain trailing after it. People with streamers and flags wave from the deck of the ship to the people below. Tug boats tug it out of the harbor, past other docks and ships. A large ship is being built on shore, the skeleton is being assembled piece by piece. It shows many men working on it. Crane shot of the entire ship. Silhouettes of cranes quietly sitting in the distance. The man talks about documentary film making and how it is a new visual medium... abstract documentaries about shapes, colors, events, etc. The next example is a film called “the Big Mill”. Panning shot of a log being pushed through a mill to be cut down. Conveyer belts, rollers, water, gears, drums, etc. Now metal sheets are cut down into panels and whisked away on conveyer belts. Stacks and stacks of metal pipes and containers and parts floating by. Nice abstract shots. Man continues while speaking of the visual art of the documentary cinema. The film ends with various different abstract shots of pipes and mills and stairs, etc. These are followed by peaceful shots of the Scottish countryside.
