Complete Record: MS of an older man (John Grierson) with glasses and a mustache sits at a desk in an office. The camera slowly zooms in on him as he talks. LS of camera following geese as they fly above a lake. LS pan over the countryside; fields, meandering streams, rolling hills, trees, and finally a castle with cannons, lookout towers, stone walls, lake views, etc. EXT shot of an old boat at the docks. The boats are deteriorating in the water to the point that only their skeletons remain. Panning shot of large, modern vessel. The ship takes off and we catch a glimpse of it moving through the rough seas. The older man talks about a film he made called “The Drifters” about ships and sea fishing. We catch a few scenes from this film: fishermen and seagulls, nets and ropes, etc. (made in the early 1930’s?) These scenes are played out to some very dramatic music. The boat is steadily rocking back and forth in the open sea. The man explains how “The Drifters” was the true start to the documentary movement. Everyday, ordinary people were making their observations known on film so that other people could experience it. Another film he made is “Industrial Britain” that includes very high contrast images of Britain's industrial work. MS and LS’s of men working in factories with steam and coal, sparks and fire. Smokestacks, cranes, steel, gears turning, mines, conveyer belts, ladders, etc. LS of men leaving their factory jobs for the day to return to their homes and families.
