Goya: his life and art

Documents the historic and artistic influences on eighteenth-century Spanish master, Francisco de Goya y Lucientes. Beginning in the province of Aragon where Goya was born, the film examines the artist's apprenticeship to a painter of the neo-baroque school and records Goya's subsequent versatility in style and medium. Explores the tapestry cartoons prepared for the Tapestry Works in Madrid, the portraits of Spanish nobility, his studies of the bullfight and the works occasioned by the Napoleonic War. Deals with Goya's difficulties with the Inquisition, his exile to France, and his later paintings which reveal a new, impressionistic view of reality.
