In contrast to the often didactic work of Sergei Eisenstein, Dziga Vertov and V.I. Pudovkin, Barnet's film is a a briskly-paced farce and parody of bourgeois entertainment. Natasha, a Moscow milliner, is given a seemingly worthless lottery ticket by her greedy landlord. When the ticket wins her a fortune, she is wildly pursued by the landlord, a love-struck railroad cashier and her true love, a poor but honest student. Barnet's first solo effort owes much to Kuleshov's experimental techniques particularly in its handling of situational narrative, functional editing structure, and use of typed actors. The film is also Note worthy for its location footage shot in the wintry countryside and in Moscow's busy streets. Making her screen debut, Anna Sten would later come to the United States where she would make an unsuccessful bid for Hollywood stardom. (Circulates).
