Covers the basic political, social, and religious characteristics of the period known as Western Chou and into the 5th century B.C. (c. 1100 B.C. to 475 B.C.) through a variety of artifacts, documents, and art materials. Explains that Chou, a culturally backward tribe to the west, conquered the Shang dynasty and formed a political system based upon the Clan--with the king the absolute ruler--which ultimately disintegrated in 770 B.C. due to an invasion by barbarians. Observes the dynasty being divided into Western and Eastern Chou; power gravitating downward to the people; warfare between states increasing; and philosophers, most notably Confucius, beginning to evolve theories for building a better society.
