television highlights are the news of yesteryear it's 1938 and from heights above rhine nazi soldiers look down upon the steel and concrete band of fortifications known as the siegfried line not merely one strip of Defense's along the river the siegfried line is 30 miles wide hundreds of miles in length whole areas network of trenches recalling the hard fought for battlegrounds of World War one block houses of steel and mortar command every position of strategic advantage guns are ready set to aim and fire and while waiting for war Nazi soldiers broadcast messages of warning to French troops across the Rhine under sunny skies outside and battlements of their own French hear how Hitler is going to rule the world someday but when the speaker blasts forth with German music the Frenchmen dance [Music] behind the Siegfried line the high Nazi officers are proudly shown the impregnability of the Rhineland bulwark with this his first line of defense Germany cannot lose or silver Nazis think and feel and boast and so do the Nazi hordes and Hitler's followers believed until 1944 when droning bombers bearing insignia of allied lands fill German skies and in rain of fiery oil bombs the Siegfried line is burnt and blistered beyond hope and it's defenders are forced to fall back [Music] and one of the impassable Siegfried line through its anti-tank emplacements American tanks and trucks pass unhindered [Applause] a live troops passed through the line on foot and do not even fired at for the Nazi defenders who are not dead have given up with lieutenant general Simpson and general Montgomery England's Prime Minister Winston Churchill inspects the ruins of Nazi domes battle proof bulwark on the Rhine and what he sees is the havoc wrought by Adolf Hitler's hope to rule the earth the mockery of stationary strength against ingenuity on the move the grim answer to Germany's question is there any power on earth that can break the Siegfried line yes there was such a power and if the war should come again there will be no need for a bulwark so flimsy as the Siegfried line it's 1928 and in Hudson River 150 canoas paddled furiously and race around New York City passing unfinished short Washington Bridge they head downstream toward New York Bay and battery with Manhattan skyscrapers in the background notice kayak type paddle used by leaders race isn't going to prove anything but this is 1928 when nothing mattered much anyway as long as you were having a good time on East River leg racers stood under Brooklyn Bridge heading northward toward choppy waters and the finish line its close race between these two with 148 others strung out behind them and here's the finish and paddler from Yonkers New York strokes his way to victory he's George Carlin tornado and flood hit Hedrick Indiana leaving more than 100 persons injured with 21 others dead homes destroyed by lashing winds and made untenable by waters which filled basements ripped in uprooted foundations [Music] but there's good side to almost everything that is what's left of school house in Hedrick and here's pupil who won't have to go to school today or tomorrow either well cheer up son it'll be over soon just look at what the well-dressed Floridian is wearing and you know this was long ago just look at what's making this trolley car move and you'll wonder how old can motion pictures get it's all part of transit system in Palm Beach in days so far in the past that even Hector's father was a pup where there's not a gas buggy in sight and the days when the horse still had America's thoroughfares all to himself Boston was seen of workhorse parade here the foreleg fellows who had to work for their oats sure they're just as clever as they are strong this one can count without benefit of fingers and here's one worthy of a gold medal award not one man o'war or ward away among them but they're champions anyway it's April 11 1928 and after flight from Germany famed yonkers plane Bremen is poised in Ireland for big Atlantic hop backer and member of crew is Baron von Yoon phone with him is Captain Herman Cole who'll share ours at the control with common Dan James II fitzmorris of the Irish Free State Air Force at 528 in the morning they take off from Baldomero flying field with New York's Mitchell field as their mark [Music] Caeser RuPt weather stormy and though they're long overdue crowds Jam Mitchell field to cheer them in and under foggy skies wait far into the night then from Labrador comes word that Flyers are down on storm swept Greenlee Island the ship badly damaged but the Flyers safe and well the battered Bremen will fly no more but in Canada famed airman ploy Bennett takes giant tri-motor plane aloft in gallant rescue efforts taken ill on flight he returns in grave condition and unable to aid Bremen flyers in Quebec hospitals soon after this floyd bennett dives a hero of the air later rescuers reach the down prove the Braman and fly them to New York after day in northern wilds they've reached their destination in two hops and a hitch but their heroes just the same that's not snow over streets of Broadway but confetti such as fill the air for Lindy only a year before the Bremen Flyers didn't make it really but in 1928 anyone who dared to fly across the Atlantic was a hero wedding in Washington it's 1928 in a nation's capital when a best-dressed events of the social season is the wedding of Dorothy Crandall - JJ Payette here's the bride with a fashionable mother and father but has anybody seen the bridegroom notice the spit curl and those earrings well style a style and here wearing satin shoes organdy gowns and carrying parisian parasols are the lovely bridesmaids notice to the transparent brims of the hats and the three-quarter length gloves it's a well dressed wedding indeed but has anybody seen the bridegroom here's a better look at the bride and her curl of fashion as bridal party arrives at church in the latest fashion and expensive cars dad gets his daughter to the ceremonies in style but has anybody seen the bridegroom oh here he is complete with father and mother and here he is kissing his brand-new bride I priests of my li-- its 1926 as Chicago gets its first enthusiastic look at sisters and floaters a fast-moving Spanish game called highlight sister is basket players are swinging and pluto's his name of goat skin covered ball used in game one of the most popular sports in Cuba and Mexico game never caught on in this country and a ball ever cut player hit quit the game [Music] it's 1936 and at Kent in South Dakota contestants in central association ski meet some of nation's foremost amateurs take to the sky to break records or bones here's one who ought to be among winners and here comes another who looks as if he'll go for a record leap no it takes a little better balance than this to fly any distance out and down and still have enough unbroken bones to try it again watch
