Description: This black and white film is one of the episodes of "Yesterday's Newsreels", an early 1950s TV show made from the General Newsreel collection. It features ten segments of historic highlights. Dollfuss Shot! (:29). Engelbert Dollfuss, the dictator of Austria, waves to a crowd on May 1, 1934 and signs a pact with Mussolini (:30-1:04). Dollfuss was assassinated July 25, 1934 by Austrian Nazis. His death mask is shown (1:05), followed by thousands mourning him in Vienna (1:06-1:18). His successor, Kurt Schuschnigg, shakes hands (1:19-1:30). Soldiers sit with machine guns as the Home Guard (Heimwehr) is ordered out by Prince Von Starhemberg (1:31-1:35). Soldiers are handed guns from the back of a truck (1:36-1:45). Minister of Defense Major Fey (1:50) puts Vienna under martial law, with trucks of soldiers to enforce it (1:51-1:59). Italian troops walk up the winding mountain paths (2:00-2:10). Soldiers in Vienna are outside the prison holding the assassins (2:11-2:35). U.S. Gains a Possession (2:47). Treasure Island, off San Francisco, was artificially built for the Golden Gate International Exposition held in 1939 and 1940 (2:49-3:00). The gates are unlocked on February 18, 1939 by California Governor Olson (3:01) and the crowds pour in (3:02-3:24). President Franklin D. Roosevelt makes a speech about the opening from Key West, Florida (3:25-4:04). Aga Khan and Aly Khan Wed (4:23). Sir Sultan Muhammed Shah (Aga Khan III) weds Andree Carron in Aix-les-Bains, France on December 7, 1929 (4:24-4:48). His son, Prince Ali Salman Aga Khan, famously married actress Rita Hayworth on May 27, 1949 (4:49-5:05). Present at the wedding dinner is Aga Khan (5:06-5:17). 1925 Personalities (5:19). British Shakespearean actress Ellen Terry talks with Sir James M. Barrie, author of Peter Pan, at her 1925 ceremony where she receives the title of Dame (5:20-5:38). She is shown at age 77, opening a home for blind children (5:39-5:48). The Roosevelts (5:50). In 1925, Theodore Roosevelt Jr. and his brother Kermit say farewell to their families before they head to Asia in search of rare animals (5:51-6:06). Marie Curie (6:07). Scientist Marie Curie, the discoverer of radium in 1898, looks through a book outside the Institut de Radium Pavillon Curie (6:08-6:17). Marie works in her laboratory (6:18-6:25). Nicaragua Rocked by Earthquake! (6:30). Buildings crumble and others burn during actual scenes of the 1931 earthquake in Nicaragua (6:38-6:51). Aerial shots show the destruction (6:52-7:08). Workers pick through rubble (7:09-7:34). U.S. Marines set up medical units (7:35-7:55). Aviation (7:58). The U.S. Army tests the viability of De Haviland-4 planes in a race October 8, 1919. Shown are take-off, flying, and landing video mostly of the winner Lieutenant BW Maynard (7:59-9:57). His wife and children stand near a Model T (9:29). 1923 Fashions (10:00). Features a brief fashion show of fur coats (10:01-10:35). 1927 Sports (10:40). This segment features the International Dog Race in Quebec (10:48-11:29). Olympian Ralph Metcalfe sprints to victory at Madison Square Garden (11:30-11:37). Also shown are the 65 meter high hurdles and the 1500 meter with Glenn Cunningham (11:38-12:19).

England's most renowned dramatic star this is Ellen Terry Sean with playwright author James Embry when the British government conferred on her the title of Dame for her theatrical achievements years later the celebrated actress then 77 years old open to home for blind children aim ellen terry queen of thespia the Roosevelts it's 1925 and Teddy Roosevelt jr. says farewell to his family TR Zelda son is Asia bound in search of rare animals brother Kermit says so long to his family happy hunting Kermit and Teddy too first lady of radium you are watching Marie Curie who devoted her life to research in physics and chemistry in 1898 Madame Curie obtained radium from pitchblende start of a career that saw the world acknowledge her supremacy in science actual scenes of the 1931 earthquake in Nicaragua initial tremor was followed by fires that destroyed the city of Managua complete devastation was the result despite efforts by Nicaraguans to combat the plane [Music] you are flying over the rabbits country only a few of nicaragua's powered buildings remained upright despite the fact that the earthquake itself lasted but six seconds civilian workers begin their gruesome task of digging for bodies in the wreckage almost 2,000 perished in the disaster with damage of 50 million dollars [Music] [Applause] boned right spot for Nicaraguans and their hour of need was presence of US Marine who helped fight fires and set up emergency medical units for civilians injured in the disaster originally scheduled to leave Nicaragua the following day Marines stayed on to provide food as well as medical care to stricken residents acting on a Marine Colonel Frederick L bradman America's fightingest fighting force turned a helping hand to humanity [Music] we're in 1919 and the United States Army is sponsoring a series of coast to coast place to test the reliability of airplanes in cockpit of this plane lieutenant BW maynard known as the flying parson who's to win the race here he leaves Mineola Long Island on a hot to the coast at the same time in Sacramento California the other half of the Army's plan goes into operation claims taking off making the west2east flight once again at Mineola the Army's lieutenant worthington arrives from the coast after creating several records so route officials check his timing just as army officers in San Francisco wake to greet the flying parson on his arrival following the east-to-west play this however is only one half of the trip Maynard after a brief rest is to set out again for his original starting place it took Maynard three days six hours and four minutes to make it to the coast but he managed to average 125 miles an hour congratulations from air service officials in California and Maynard heads back east leaving Chicago the flying parson has just conquered near disaster when forced down in Omaha but he's on his way to victory in this race starting point again Mineola Long Island and Maynard's wife and two children are included in the crowd waiting for him to appear after his flight Maynard was later to be hailed by Colonel Billy Mitchell as first fire of the army [Music] here's maynard congratulated by roosevelt fields commander after making return flight in only 25 hours that's Trixie who flew with Maynard and here's a family reunion in front of his de Havilland ship yes Maynard made it [Applause] feminine finery in 1923 fashion show brings out a preview of afternoon and evening attire to be favored by the lady for the coming season [Applause] things have changed wouldn't you say and would you also say thank goodness let's go up to Quebec for the International dog race that attracted Huskies from the Northwest and Canada they're off on a grueling 120 mile course that saw dogs sleds and masters racing 40 miles a day for three days it's a tough grind but the honor of the race keeps the Huskies heating along to the finish and here it is in a blinding snowstorm winner of the contest the dog team driven and owned by a Canadian and here he is Emile's angora from snow trails to track and field Madison Square Garden sees winning star Ralph Metcalfe second from far line flash across the date in the 65 meter high hurdles a new world record is being set by the New York Athletic Club's entry but the crowds waiting for the 1500 meter event yes and there it is gene Ben ski against Glenn Cunningham Cynder rivalry at its best with Ben ski on the inside Cunningham was about to make his move but trying to pass Glenn break stride off goes gene with Cunningham pouring it on in an attempt to overtake his flying rival he's starting to close in the genes last-minute sprint leaves Cunningham behind by inches what a race what a finish [Music]
