YESTERDAY'S NEWSREEL - GEN. DOUGLAS MACARTHUR FOLSOM PRISON ARTHUR MURRAY SOCIAL SECURITY

[Music] television highlights of the news of yesteryear [Applause] it's 1912 and in washington dc this member of united states censors office is busy with pancho via incident west point graduate since 1903 his name is douglas macarthur on military expedition to veracruz mexico he's captain macarthur and among his associates is another young unknown to win fame during not too far distant wars youth from germany named transvan poppin [Applause] among many to recognize macarthur's military brilliance in first world war is general john blackjack pershing after winning laurels on french battlefields macarthur comes home and november 20th 1919 now brigadier general he's head of west point and here he is reviewing cadets during visit to academy of britain's popular prince of wales who also saw a service in france macarthur's command of west point is as brilliant as his record as student there his scholastic average highest in points history so in 1930 it's another step up military ladder for macarthur now major general he becomes nation's seventh military chief of staff and youngest to receive such honor swearing him in is major general e.a krieger then at military post in san francisco chief of staff macarthur inspects west coast troops with generals craig and caldwell with world war one well behind him macarthur guides our military operation in world at peace in manila philippine islands in 1935 he watches philippine president kazon sign 10-year plan for island defense and military training first step in america's operations to give philippine islands their independence free and clear but then macarthur is called back to war ten years later august 30th 1945 he steps from plane at atsugi airport japan on orders from president truman to accept terms of surrender from defeated japanese the dartanian of the aef in world war one is the victorious five-star general who led allied troops from australia to tokyo and victory in world war ii on board uss missouri macarthur accepts japanese plea for cessation of hostilities and reads terms of unconditional surrender while allied officers stand at attention and leaders of bowed nation listen it's great moment in history greatest moment perhaps in the life of douglas macarthur born in arkansas military barracks at 13 an obscure student at west texas military academy a one-time military aide to his father in japanese capital he now finishes job of winning war in pacific half of world but he does more than win the war at his headquarters in tokyo he's military governor of the defeated japanese and as such is still fighting to win and keep the peace july 4th 1946 he returns to manila for some unfinished business it's independence day in philippine islands the philippines are free nation now and thousands cheer general douglas macarthur who for nearly 50 years has led the fight for freedom everywhere [Music] it's 24th of november 1927 and here at california's folsom prison national guardsmen and state police march in to quail riot that leaves nine convicts and two guards dead plus 31 wounded some not expected to live wharton court smith was prisoner in own office but here he is free again after day of horror trapped in cell block rioting convicts phoned warden for surrender turns they were accepted quickly and riots now over but guards are not prepared for further outbreaks recaptured leaders of triumph of freedom will now never see outside of prison walls they are in for life for deaths they caused may be tried for murder here's boxing champion edward mickey walker no doubt in training for defense of his title king of middleweights from 1926 until june 1931 mickey won crown in 10 round decision over tiger flowers retired unbeaten later won new laurels as painter mickey east west flight it's just test journey this time but success of two flights gives promise of daily trips between new york and london before year is out fort washington is american terminus of new airline caledonia passed london-bound u.s plane in mid-atlantic comes in for landing just the smoothest clippers to flight's over but new kind of air travel begins cold cash for old age new york senator robert wagner leads passage of state old age security act it's february 17 1930 and aged in need of pensions are quick to sign applications for help all needy persons over 70 years of age will get aid starting first of january 1931. state and county governments are scheduled to share cost of act as new york launches security for its aged men and women all dressed up for flying travel by air has just ceased to be a novelty so this costume of the time shows what the chic airlines passenger ought to wear those goggles that white leather helmet and that tight-fitting leather collar indicate this lady bird is going sailing in an open ship [Music] for travel in cabin planes or sky cruisers of the day lady lindy still wore helmets but fluffy raccoon collar on tweed coat gave feminine flyers more feminine look still more to the feminine taste here's flying helmet of black satin but she still needs big collar to keep her warm those scarf-like collars come in mighty handy when it's windy up there see how it wraps around your throat in today's high-flying fast-moving airships you take off your coat and sit back as relaxed as in your own living room but when flying was a fairly new frill women went up warm as possible or came down with a cold [Music] hey what's the rush oh it's running of steeplechase at teal england most of these contestants are old men now and this race is probably one of the reasons why party british schoolboys think nothing of those hurdles but they'll need plenty of methylate and band-aid tonight don't blow me there wasn't any such thing in those days a wagon
