home but heroics are not forgotten after pieces won Brunswick New Jersey becomes site of memorial to the heroism and sacrifice of the Red Cross ambulance driver in midst of war they too were courageous at chateau-thierry news are gone and the Marne but peace does not bring an end to human misery peacetime disasters mean full mobilization for Red Cross men and women flood earthquake fire and explosion take their toll of human lives as the Red Cross brings aid and comfort to the living there's food shelter for those who lost homes and clothing against the cold of winter time disasters then as now Red Cross Aid has reached all those in need of help and as times have changed so have the equipment organization and look of the Red Cross disaster in modern times as met and fought with modern means and methods today the Red Cross offers aid not only in times of trouble Red Cross workers are bringing important know-how into the American home for example showing brother how to be mother to baby and there's many a wounded GI of world war two who owes his life to the miracles of the American Red Cross blood bank this was war against death and this was the way the Red Cross helped the GI fight his battle against homesickness and the fear of fear [Music] draftees of the early 40s will probably never forget the arms and smiling faces of Red Cross girls who dance with them nights before secret sailings and then often tearfully waved them off to war nor will those who came home to lie in hospitals some to live forever in the wards forget the Red Cross shows the bright bedside performances for the big gay gatherings on hospital lawns for the Red Cross could not forget that war goes on for some soldiers well there's Joey Brown called by the Red Cross to put on the faces of the wounded smiles as big as his yes in war in peace the Red Cross puts comfort and curry in the heart here's Lawrence be Sperry inventor and here's his creation the gigantic Sperry gyro stabilizer sway a big instrument is expected to prevent sway of big ocean liners from the sea is rough this is 14th of April 1922 and top nautical minds of times wonder if overgrown gadget will work tests and time prove it to work all right and few years later its boon to ocean travelers big feather in cap of and better Lawrence Ferry [Music] here's Henry Cabot Lodge United States Senator for 31 stops posing for publicity stills to say hi to husband Edmund Mo was that better also at Malibu Warner Baxter sheds his robe for a swim in the Pacific sir already in the swim is actor Neal Hamilton Baxter can brave any danger now for just recently he won an Oscar for his portrayal of the adventurous Cisco Kid [Music] it's third of October 1930 and this is what's left of four-story tenement in New York's Greenwich Village at ten minutes after 6:00 this morning entire building collapsed all but two of its occupants were asleep out of the rubble in Rouen police and firemen dig 14 bruised and bleeding persons and 5 of them are dead condemned as unfit building was seen to quake and tremble on several occasions prior to catastrophe grim evidence the tragedy could have been avoided it's ninth of August 1919 added camp up to new fame mobilization center during First World War circus performers give their best for Doughboy still in uniform Suffolk County Society is responsible for appearance of aerialist acrobats and animal acts here's the way they took a spin in 1919 [Applause] it's all free for soldiers and their guests and no circus is complete without the delightful doings of well-trained dog slide for life is safe way to cross crowded streets and for bicycle enthusiasts here's the best way in the world to break our neck ere going lawn mower designed to clip clouds while on the wings of the wind this cockeyed contraption of the 1920s can't even cut grass but then it's not a lawn mower but a designer's dream of a plane that will rise vertically and then fly away dream turns into nightmare though it just can't get off this earth [Music] hitting the sack in silk here the long look back to the early 1930s to lounging fashion for men with plenty of time to loud via the depression days remember for the fast pace of torrid twenties now a mere memory so there's plenty of time for plenty of people to get themselves in shape for the hard work of job hunting or a day of idle ease for either or both this fella was going to be sick and he's also going to look at this in case the employment agent comes around and just who do we think we're kidding well anyway this is how men of the early 30s looked in the early morning [Music] and they put their libraries to good use well we can dream can't we here's a lengthy showing of what men in the early thirties used for sure the flasher and fancier the better according to the fancy pants of the time since this is what he wore where it didn't show just think of the terrible flurry in flesh he must have sported on his time everything he wears a silk so the poor worm wouldn't recognize it the worm who spun it not the one aware that we [Music] it's pajamas and robe of silk the man of the Depression 30s is breast to kill but all he has to kill is time and with plenty of that on his hands what'd he do why it looked as if he's going to read one of those books of all things it's 1919 and at Alameda California crews of Washington and California are off to fast start an important Pacific Coast regatta it's smooth going at first but then crews throw into rougher water's too rough for the crewmen from California waves wash over gunnels and oarsmen have to hire help from launch as they sink lower in the water nothing sunny for these Californians [Music]
