Here's the latest in my periodic series of classic synthpop re-creations, this one by special request from someone who needed the tracks for a tribute band. I don't really call these "covers," because I'm not doing any sort of creative interpretation. The goal is to get as close as possible to the original recording. So really, this is a technical exercise more than anything. It's a pretty accurate transcription. Normally I don't use ANY samples or sound material from the original recording itself, but in this case I cheated on one sound- the low clavinet type sound. I know it's an old Fairlight preset, but I just couldn't find the original Fairlight sound, so I sampled one note from the original track and sequenced the part using that. I was able to find sufficiently close Fairlight sample matches for all the other Fairlight sounds in this track. I sequenced this in Cubase with a variety of softsynths. Drums are standard Linn LM2 samples. I didn't slave over every last patch, so some of them are closer to the mark than others. I also didn't bother with the rhythmic vocal sample sounds, as nobody would want to hear my make my own imitation samples of those. Probably could have worked on the mix a bit more, but oh well, life's too short. Here's the raw midi file if you want to take a stab at programming the sounds yourself, just credit me for the transcription if you post your results anywhere: https://www.dropbox.com/s/y4t8es5fuyng2xx/yaz%20-%20state%20farm%20-%20peahix.zip?dl=1. Enjoy.
