beautiful writing plain and fancy done in a cursive hand or printed sweetly printed so neatly easy to understand beautiful writing is exciting more than it might seem written with swirls and Tails and twelves and shapes that people dream a long time ago when capital letters were dragons and beasts and birds writing was a work of art and so much more than words not paper chiseled on walls or printed in a good long book beautiful writing is exciting take another look ancient Romans living over 2,000 years ago developed the capital letters we use today Romans chiseled their letters into stone composing on the monuments and buildings that the Emperor's of Rome built to impress people with their power and importance these letters were legible but they were not practical for everyday use because they took a long time to choose all stone could not be carried around easily so the Roman scribes copied these letters on papyrus or parchment with a pen made from a feather or reed and this was faster than chiseling stone but it still took a long time scribes tried to write faster as a result the letters became more round these rounded capitals were used for several hundred years but they too evolved all over Europe in every court the local scribes had their own distinct way of writing letters some of this writing was hard to read and caused great confusion to end this confusion and to unify Europe the Great King Charlemagne gave an order in the 8th century for the reform of handwriting he instructed his scribes to develop an alphabet that was easy to read and that was standardized so that everybody in Europe could use it his scribes developed an alphabet of small letters we still use today we call it print or print manuscript there's a Charlemagne most people could not read or write these skills were reserved for a small group of people Kings Nobu's bishops and scholars hired by the nobility all books were written by hand I'm filled with pictures so that those who couldn't read could still understand both scribes spent their time making copies of the Bible there were also books on philosophy and religion and books about the conquests of kings and noblemen books desired by the rich and powerful to maintain their power in these magnificent books the first letter of each sentence was made larger usually colored often decorated and sometimes made in the shape of an animal or pest today we have simplified these decorated letters to a plain capital letter at the beginning of each sentence during the Middle Ages after Charlemagne books became fancier the letters became more elaborate and the pages were filled with even more pictures and decorations the nobles and bishops of the time wanted the pages of their books to show off their wealth and importance all the books were pretty to look at they were hard to read the Gothic style used was so complicated that it often took years for scribes to complete one book during the Renaissance which began in Italy there was an enormous growth in trade more and more people learn to read and write scribes wanted a writing style that was easy to read and easy to write they copied the alphabet the chalamaiah had established several hundred years before with a few small changes printers at about the same time began publishing books they used the print manuscript letters as a model for the design of their type and we still use this design in printed books today when print manuscript is written fast the straight lines become slanted and the letters become connected this is called cursive script Italian Renaissance writing masters printed books that showed how to write in a cursive style their cursive style became popular because it was fast to write and easy to read people used it for legal documents for records of business commerce for writing letters for writing stories and for poetry cuz it came from Italy this cursive style was called italic script the writing instrument determines the form of the letters blunt pens were used to write italic cursive when flexible pointed pens later came into use the shape of the cursive letters changed we call this variation round hand and it is the basis of our modern cursive script today we write with all kinds pencils and pens all handwriting is different because we're all different people whether we use a quill or a pencil a ballpoint or a fine gold pen it is important to write legibly because communication is the essence of writing you
