Heat. Heat. [Music] This is my country. This is Brazil. [Music] Tell me, how do you begin to describe a country that covers half a continent? Where do you start? The falling waters of Iguasu, [Music] the mountains that run down to the sea to Rio. My country is so many things. It's hard to know where to begin. [Music] One day you were flying over those mountains to visit Brazil. [Music] One day a clipper ship will touch down in rail and a dream will begin to come true for you. [Music] Perhaps this is where I should begin. [Music] Yes. Let me start here. Let me start with you in Rio. [Music] Rio Janeied. I have heard it called the most beautiful city in South America. perhaps in the old award. I don't really know if that's true, but it's not very hard to believe. At first glance, when we ky yorkers may seem to be very busy, always rushing to get somewhere. But when you really get to know us, you will find that underneath all the hurry, life in Ree is gentle and easygoing. [Music] Gentle and easy. What else would you expect in the city that has Copa Cababana Beach Adit's front Oh, Nature has been very generous to Rio. Nature has been extravagant. [Music] Take the cable car to the top of Bondasuker. the top of sugar loaf. [Music] Let the seat show you its main is changing faces. [Music] Look out across Rio to the great stone figure of Christ at the peak of Kovado. [Music] Yes, perhaps you have discovered that world's most beautiful city. It was in the month of April in the year 1500 that a Portuguese sea captain first saw the coast of Brazil and claimed it for his country. [Music] The men who came from Portugal to settle here were builders and teachers. [Music] And some of them were adventurers. Pioneers went out into the wilderness of a new continent, hunting for gold and building where they found it. [Music] Oro Ptou, a gold rush town that went to sleep when the gold rush died. [Music] You hear the sound of a church bell and you wonder why come the hours in a town where time stands still. [Music] The buildings of Horupu may be dreaming of the past, but time did not stand still. When the gold ran out, men turned to the land itself, and the land was more faithful than gold. [Music] The coffee plantations of Brazil still come to life in the early morning sun. There is work to be done in the fields. [Music] [Music] A new crop is waiting to be harvested. [Music] Coffee was the new gold of Brazil and coffee is still the richest harvest in the country. [Music] coffee for More than half the ward laid out to dry in the Brazilian sun. [Music] When you drink your morning coffee, you can taste the warmth, bright sunlight. In your breakfast cup, you hold the wealth of my country. [Music] Coffee built a great modern industry and Brazil began to flex its muscles. [Music] S Paulo, a great industrial metropolis, a town that still lives like a pioneer. Serious, hardworking, always in a hurry. [Music] Skyscrapers, yes. but green parks and sunlight too. The shapes and colors of nature are the tools of our modern architects. Our buildings grow like strange new flowers. The blue and white tiles of colonial days take on strange new designs. [Music] This is the face of modern Brazil. [Music] And these two bright colors, music, and the joy of living. [Music] In Brazil, you can never take things seriously for very long. Why not give into it? Enjoy yourself. [Music] Just once live dangerously. [Music] [Applause] [Music] a country with more than 4,000 miles of sea coast. A country of blue lakes high in the mountains. These two is Brazil. [Music] Tell me, have you ever had a secret yearning to learn December? to show off of the latest steps. [Music] You cannot be here very long before you hear the words makaza. My house is your house. [Music] Makaza, you are always welcome. [Music] [Music] There are times when I feel that I must get away from the big towns to breathe for a few days the gentle air of the Atlantic beaches. [Music] There are times when I envied the simple life of the fisherman. [Music] His boat is called a jangada. Just a few logs bound together into a raft and they canvas to catch the wind, but it's enough to take him out on the open sea. [Music] The sail is checked unfolded again and he's ready to push off. [Music] There are times when I envy the beach combers life, the cool shade of the coconut groves along the shore. [Music] Sometimes I think this is the way to live. [Music] Be in Rio when the dr beat changes to music and carnival comes rolling down from the hills like a tropical thunderstorm. Crazy and wonderful. [Music] Being real when the summer comes down from the hills, dancing to the streets like lightning. [Music] [Music] Not bad. [Music] [Music] Four days and four nights in the streets of Rio in the elegant hotels in Copa Cababana. The rhythm of the simba. [Music] Heat. Heat. Heat. Heat. [Music] Oh my god. Like a tropical storm, carnival is over as suddenly as it began. And Brazil is itself again. My country so many things. It is like trying to describe a word that has no translation.
