Description: Based in part on the poems of Rainer Maria Rilke, this film marked Wenders' return to Germany after a sojourn in America. Wenders examines the divided city of Berlin through two angels, Cassiel and Damiel who oversee the activities of its inhabitants. They are invisible to all but children. Damiel, however, has grown weary and frustrated by his inability to affect the people he watches. Visiting a traveling circus, he falls in love with a beautiful trapeze artist. Encouraged by a former angel, now an actor in a film about the war, he decides to abandon the ethereal sphere for the world of earthly delights. (Circulates)
