Window Watchers (June 3, 1954)

hi window Watchers no one I have here in my hand well there's something that you might use after every me all their toothpicks know what we're going to do with them I have some clear cement right here are some real good glue I'm going to put them together and all sorts of ways I'm going to make little things here's something right here that I made earlier this morning can you tell what it is just out of just by gluing toothpicks together the little house and this is what it looks like if i take the roof off all those toothpicks have been coming together and then i took a plane on a piece of paper folded it in half and i can set it right down there on top like that and have a little house now you can make lots of these all different sizes and use them for the ranch houses or farm buildings and you can just make yourself a whole little countryside out of nothing but toothpicks so I thought we just might make something out of these toothpicks afternoon so I'm going to set this little house over here i'm going to start building first I guess I better dump some toothpicks out here you know there's lots and lots of toothpicks that come in one box and you can just make dozens of things with one box of toothpicks and then you probably wouldn't finish the whole thing but when you're starting to build if you're going to build a make a building one late two toothpicks doll side by side here so they're just about that far apart and then we'll take some glue here and we'll put a drop of you right there on this side I'm one over here and then two spots on the other two things there so then we can take one of these in my right across right in the middle of all that glob of glue and another one over here and there we are that is the beginning of the framework of this little building now that of course is a square when you can break the tooth picks up and make smaller ones or you can glue them together and on end and make larger buildings you can make fences out of them and you can break them in happen and by gluing them together you can make animals but you could take the tube of glue and drop the glue on with the tube like this but it helps quite a bit to have another toothpick in your hands that you can put some glue on the very edge of it and then dip it right on the toothpicks so let's build this one up some more now this is a very good thing and it's a lot of fun to do too when it rains and you have to stay inside all day long you're looking for something to do well usually you'll have some toothpicks around the house and usually you'll have some glue too and it's a lot of fun to see just how tall you can make things well I think I have some glue on each of these corners so we'll just add two more to six and we'll just build it up some more and see what happens now if you notice on me the little building that I showed you before that I said could be a ranch house well it was long and narrow here I'll show you see it wasn't the shape that this one's going to be at all see how long and narrow it is that's just buy it I broke toothpicks in half and used only I have a toothpick right across the ends of these and that's how you make many different shapes that they are let's get some more glue on here and build this up a little bit higher let's see this one one across this place if next one will go just the opposite way another toothpick right down there and it gets higher and how you can build them just as high as you want to you don't need very much glue right in these corners either just a little drop of it and it dries very very quickly i'm using an airplane glue and by the time I finish what I'm doing the buck the bottom part of that where we first started that blue will be dry you can't do too much picking up and pushing around with it until the glue is dry after we make something here then we're going to talk about some of the things that you can use them for after they're finished well you could set them up on your dresser or on your bookcase in your room just to have some little knickknacks sitting around and make it look a little more interesting but there are other things that you can do with these little houses and people and was that you can make out of toothpicks to you know after you get it up so far you might wonder about putting a roof on a different kind of a roof that was on this first little house that we saw so just as soon as I put two more on here I'll show you how you can build up the sides and get some points that you can put a roof on you can put either a toothpick rough or a paper real fun or lots of other things to anything that you can think of that you could use for a route would be a good thing to use there now let's set up some side poles side pools are set on by putting some glue on the lower half of the toothpick all around the bottom there like that then we'll just pass right here in the corner and it will stand up and lean right there in the corner and you just leave it there you can't be moving a table around or else it'll fall down you put one of these in every corner sure there's plenty of plenty of your lures or cement on these toothpicks because they really need a lot to stick there on the side just like that see and then if you wanted this could be a first story and you can go right ahead from here onion I'm bill the second story on there by starting all over like we did at the beginning only halfway up these side two things I'm going to put the last one on here and then I'll show you one that that has been sitting here just a little while so that it's dry now if they fall over like this one here probably means there wasn't enough glue on there or else the glue dried before you go before I got it down so I put some more on in the corner like that now I'm going to be very careful i'm going to move this one away and i'm going to put one that's just about like it's aight in its place right there this one can just sit right over here for a while there now this is basically what I just got through doing see all these two things that go around us or holding them into pieces on either end and come right straight up in the air well let's put a roof on this one a different kind of neutral going to cut a piece of paper so it's about the right size for the roof that I walked let's see I think it's getting small enough I don't know that looks like a pretty big roof for that little building doesn't it cuts more we're now then set it on top like this using our fingers we can pull to fix right through the top of the paper come to and then the back to and we can push it right down down just as far as we want to and then if we want to start making a second story on there then we just start all over again by laying the toothpicks either on the outside or on the inside and then of course we're at to glue them together to but that's what the second story goes on see just like the first one did and then there's a little house if you look right here I left some space right between the toothpicks and the rough that's where the windows are of course you have to use your imagination a little bit but then it's always fun to try and make things out of various materials that we have at home so now I told that we were going to talk a little bit about what we could do with these things other than just look at them when we got through making them one of the things we can do is to make a little oh I'm official garden I suppose you'd call it and use these little houses in the garden so I have a box of dirt right here and you can either use a cardboard box but if you're going to plant anything in it which I'll tell you about in just a minute probably want to use a wooden box and I fill the box with dirt and then i have the lid of a cam right here and I'm going to sink this lid right down the middle of all this dirt so it when I push the dirt in around it like that all even and then I'm going to fill this little can up with water and have a little lake here's the water pour it in the lid T there's a little lake in the middle of all this and the house where does it go oh well the house goes right over here like that see and then I have a stick here and this stick is just depart other bush or part of a tree and it all by itself looks like a tree and if the box were deep enough I could just stick it right down in here and have a tree growing but since the box isn't going to be quite deep enough I have some clay here it's a little soft clay that doesn't get hard I'm going to stick the tree right down in the clay like that and then I'm going to bury the clay in the corner of the box and cover it up with the dirt to now then take some stones and I can make a little rock garden over here well perhaps it's even a rock path that leads away from the bridge well now you say you don't see a bridge but if you watch right here you will see one because I'm going to take this piece of cardboard I'm going to bend it in the center we're going to put it down right there it's too long so I'll have to cut some of it all I think it should be a little bit higher without folding it I can just bend cardboard so you can go out of the house and across the pond and over into the back garden and it looks kind of funny with this tree which is the branches on it here and no leaves on it so you could take bits of crepe paper and twist them around there and make your own leaves on the branches of the tree and then there's something else that you can do to you can get some grass seeds and you can take these grass seed and sprinkle them all over in the dirt just like that sprinkle them all around and Pat them down with your fingers so that you bury them just a little bit and water and then pretty soon in a couple of days you'll have green grass growing in your little garden now you know there's still another thing that you can do that your mothers would probably like to have if you would if you would do something like this and give it to them see right here this is a flower mole and I've taken pieces of clay and put it in the bottom and made one of these little houses and this is a little Chinese house and I've set it on a piece of clay in the bottom of this flower bowl and made a little bridge that ran over to another piece of clay and then the flowers can be stuck right here in the role that makes a very pretty centerpiece for a table doesn't it why did you ask your mother she won't give you a large flat flower bowl and let you try something like this with glue and toothpicks and paper mentioned put flowers in it later on try it sometime here by now you
