Where the red fern grows

Set in the Ozarks of Oklahoma in 1930, this story centers on young Billy Colman's ambition to have two hunting dogs. Spurred on by his grandfather's wisdom, Billy works hard to save enough money to buy his Redbone hounds. Combining adventure, suspense and tragedy, the film captures the devotion that can develop between a boy and his dogs. Billy trains the animals to be the best coonhounds in the county. (Circulates)

12-year-old Billy Colman is obsessed with coon dogs and coon hunting, but good dogs cost money his family can't afford. Billy's grandpa tells him that if he wants dogs he has to earn them. He begins working multiple jobs and finally earns the fifty dollars two puppies will cost. Billy orders the dogs, but they arrive in Tahlequah, 30 miles away, because the mail stage won't carry live animals. The dogs become famous in that part of the country.
