How long ago was yesterday? How much time before tomorrow? Clock time is measured in minutes, but people time is measured in growth. Clock time is perpetual, but people time is finite with a beginning, and a middle, and an end. And each young person growing up finds himself asking, "What time is it now?" This boy is breaking the law. Yet soon be drafted. If he's old enough to serve and old enough to work, why isn't he old enough to drink? Why do people drink? Some drink to be accepted. Some drink to be grown-up. Others drink to escape problems. And still others drink to lower inhibitions. But mature people drink because alcohol can be a pleasurable and relaxing social beverage. Each time of life has its own set of goals. And for young people, the prime goal is independence. That's why a person who uses alcohol, who depends upon alcohol to help him do things he should be doing by himself, is taking a step backward, retrogressing to a time in life when dependency was necessary. He comes to learn what to look for, what to expect, how to react. Many of his responses become automatic. But young drivers lack this experience. They partially compensate, however, with alert handling and quick reaction times. The boldness and courage of youth can make young men good race drivers. But because of lack of experience, emergencies that older drivers have come to expect sometimes catch young people unprepared. Because of this lack of experience, only having a partially developed memory bank, young drivers are less able to compensate for the effects of alcohol. Alcohol has brought on a false sense of security. He thinks he's doing great. But being an inexperienced drinker, he's not able to compensate for the loss in vision, the loss in reaction time, the loss in good judgment caused by the alcohol. Newly acquired skills are the first to go when a person drinks, making alcohol all the more threatening for the young driver. A poor race, but he'll finish. This time all he's lost is time. How much does it take to get drunk? It took this boy very little. He drank to be accepted. Next thing he knew, he was drunk on a single glass of beer. He's experiencing what is known as psychological intoxication. He drank to be accepted and ended up being rejected. Every state has laws governing the minimum age for drinking. Drinking when underage is a misdemeanor. Beneath the surface of each person lie certain impulses, hostile, antisocial, unacceptable, which mature people manage to control most of the time. But alcohol, particularly with the inexperienced drinker, affects that part of the brain that controls these violent impulses, often releasing them. Resisting arrest, a felony.
