Wells & Fargo employee Ramsay MacKay (Joel McCrea) is sent to open trails to California in 1840s. MacKay and Justine Pryor (Frances Dee) begin seeing each other, though her mother disapproves, as does her more socially prominent suitor, Talbot Carter. When MacKay sets out with the gold, he is shot and left for dead by two robbers. He is threatened by his miner customers, who do not believe he was robbed, but MacKay shows them a draft from Wells Fargo that will cover all their losses.
