The 1943 film "Wagon Wheels West" is a short Western compilation by Warner Bros. that draws almost entirely on archival footage from the 1936 feature film "Song of the Saddle". In terms of plot, both films adapt the story of "The Count of Monte Cristo" in a Western setting. In both films, a young boy survives the murder of his father, who was robbed by ruthless bandits or traders. Years later, the boy (now an adult) returns. He poses as a Deputy U.S. Marshal to lure the gang's now-powerful leader (Hook) into a trap and avenge his father's murder. 'Song of the Saddle' (1936) is a 58-minute, full-length 'Singing Cowboy' feature film with numerous musical and singing numbers. 'Wagon Wheels West' (1943), on the other hand, is a short Western compilation (approx. 17 minutes) that condenses the revenge story to a minimum and covers historical milestones in the settlement of the American West. In "Song of the Saddle", Dick Foran played the lead role ('The Singing Kid') and sang in the film. In 1943, Robert Shayne took over the role of the adult avenger. The scenes depicting his youth, however, are taken from the 1936 film (played by George Ernest). In both versions, the leader of the villains ('Hook') is portrayed by the same actor: Charles Middleton (famous as Ming the Merciless from "Flash Gordon"). 'Song of the Saddle' was directed by Louis King, with a screenplay by William Jacobs. 'Wagon Wheels West' was directed by B. Reeves Eason, with a screenplay also by William Jacobs. For actress Nina Foch, this was her very first appearance on the big screen.
