Arthur Penn filmed the pole-vault event; Miloš Forman the decathlon; Kon Ichikawa, the 100-meter dash; Claude Lelouch concentrated on the athletes who lost at the Olympics; John Schlesinger recorded the stamina of the marathon-runner; Juri Ozerov showed the tense moments before the starting gun fires; Michael Pfleghar focused on the women participants; Mai Zetterling, the only woman director, contributed an unorthodox view of the weightlifters.
