Description: Discusses and evaluates the number of methods for determining infective units of plant or animal viruses in a sample. Shows that mixed infections can produce phenotypic mixing, heterozygosis, or true genetic recombination (in influenza and vaccinia viruses). Presents evidence that the protein and nucleic acid components of virus are separable: the RNA thus isolated is infective (in tobacco and mammalian cells) and probably DNA (from phage) is also, demonstrating that virus protein plays no part in replication either of the genetic material or of itself.
