Description: Story of a young woman about to take final vows in a convent but who becomes involved in setting up a refuge for society's outcasts. She finds out that she cannot save any lost souls through prayer and charity. A satire on religion and society. Spanish film; English subtitles., Viridiana, about to take religious vows, returns to visit her uncle, Don Jaime. He is struck by her resemblance to his wife who died on her wedding night. Persuading his servant to drug her, he intends to seduce his niece but cannot go through with it. For her part, Viridiana opens up her guardian's house to a collection of beggars. Savage in its attack on Catholic ritual, Bunuel's film was banned in Spain and condemned by the Vatican who objected, in particular, to the notorious re-creation of the Last Supper by the outcasts.
