Secretary of Defense Robert McNamara introduces this review of U.S. military capabilities and news from 1963. Includes Operation Big Lift in which the 2nd Armored Division was emergency lifted to Germany for NATO exercise. Detailed coverage of the operation. General Paul L. Freeman, Jr. (US Army), provides a summary of the operation. Summary of the Army's reorganization, inclusive of nuclear capabilities. Marines train for amphibious assault. Navy utilizes new surface-to-air capabilities--USS Berkeley (DDG-15) fires a missile--and air-to-air missiles. Updates on aircraft carrier and Polaris submarine production in 1963 (interior view of Polaris missile bay). Strategic Air Command highlights Minute Man missiles and strategic bombers as well as completion of the missile defense network. Civil Defense agencies stock bomb shelters and unveil the Emergency Broadcast Network. Updates on defense space initiatives. Review of the geopolitical situation begins with Southeast Asia (Vietnam) and Korea. Army Signal Corps camera documents incident between North Korean and U.S. Army personnel in the DMZ.
