To provide close air support U.S. Navy Seabees build an ELF (Expedition Landing Field)at Chu Lai to accommodate Marine attack squadron VMA-224 and VMA-225. At Da Nang, HAWK anti-aircraft missiles are deployed and Phantom fighters of VMFA-323 initiate a new era of Marine ground support capabilities. An unidentified Marine Colonel speaks while being attended by medical staff about his mission coordinating fire from a helicopter during which he was badly wounded in the leg. As part of a general overview of infantry operations (with sound) CBS News correspondent Dan Rather assists others carrying a wounded Marine (name Manning) during the fighting at Tam Ky.
