URBAN USES OF LAND FOR EDUCATION, CULTURE AND RECREATION

students learn how to use tools and how to make useful articles the students in this class are studying mathematics many students in high school take a class in typing the ability to use a typewriter is useful in writing reports for many different School subjects in the high school chemistry laboratory students experiment to learn scientific truths this class is studying chemical reactions many high school graduates continue their education at a college or university the University of California at Los Angeles is one of the large universities of the state the university occupies about 400 acres of land in the western part of the city as more and more students come to the university each year it is necessary to construct many new buildings most of the land in this airplane view is occupied by the buildings of another great University the University of Southern California these buildings are used for Research Laboratories libraries and classrooms in every large city some land is used for religious buildings such as churches and synagogues most large cities have different kinds of museums the Los Angeles County Museum of Art is a cultural center for people who enjoy seeing and studying works of art the student of art may see creations of the great masters of the past or the works of present day artists this building is used for art exhibits which are changed frequently some of the largest sculptures are shown outdoors in front of the gallery paintings and other works of art from all over the world are displayed inside the art galleries this Art Gallery contains the permanent exhibits many cities have large outdoor theaters where entertainment is presented during summer months world famous Hollywood Bowl is so large that over seventeen thousand people can be seated at one time Hollywood Bowl is a natural Outdoor Theater at the foot of the Hollywood Hills pageants valets operas concerts and other cultural activities are presented in the summer months many cities also have beautiful theaters or concert Halls in the early evening people come to the Los Angeles Music Center to enjoy performances of symphony concerts operas and ballets the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion is the largest of three buildings in the Music Center in the amundsen theater dramatic stage plays and musical comedies are presented the Mark Taper forum is used for lectures recitals and plays before the performance begins people enjoy the beauty of the Music Center most large cities have a baseball park where people can watch America's favorite sport thousands of fans enjoy the excitement of a Major League baseball game at Dodger Stadium many cities have a large Stadium where pageants rodeos football games track meets and other sports events are held this is Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum located in Exposition Park thousands of people are watching a track and field meet at the Coliseum because the stadium is so large many different events take place at the same time one of the events is called the hammer throw the contestant throws a heavy ball attached to a chain the man who throws the ball the farthest wins many different kinds of sports events take place in the Coliseum and provide Recreation for thousands of people Exposition Park contains a beautiful rose garden visitors come to this quiet place to relax and enjoy the beauty of thousands of rose bushes the Museum of Natural History is also located in Exposition Park this Museum contains a great variety of interesting exhibits in the La Brea room skeletons of prehistoric animals are displayed city parks provide many kinds of recreation for people of all ages children have fun on the slides grassy areas of the park may be used for an exciting game of baseball level grassy areas may also be used for playing volleyball large areas of a city park may be used for a golf course some people come to the park to play a fast game of tennis the hilly areas of this park have many miles of trails for horseback riding and hiking many large cities have a zoo where people come to watch and study animals from all over the world this Zoo covers hundreds of acres of land some people like to ride the special buses as they tour the interesting exhibits polar bears come from Arctic regions they are excellent swimmers and like to eat fresh fish the polar bear is very large often weighing as much as one thousand pounds the zoo homes for the animals are built so that visitors to the zoo are always at a safe distance this small brown bear is called the sun bear elephants are among the most popular zoo animals these elephants are enjoying a cool refreshing bath the long powerful trunk of the elephant is used to get water the elephant sucks water into his trunk and then blows it into his mouth elephants usually live in herds or family groups unlike many wild animals the elephant is easily Tamed another place where people can go to enjoy their leisure time is Marineland of the Pacific Marineland is located near Los Angeles Harbor on 90 acres of land overlooking the Pacific Ocean in the whale Stadium crowds of people watch the dolphins and whales perform the Dolphins have been trained to LEAP High into the air in formation the trained whales can do many wonderful tricks watch the high jumping whale snatch food from her trainer's hand many cities have miles of beautiful sandy beaches nearby people of all ages enjoy going to the beach children use the swings and slides at the beach people who live in Southern California as well as visitors from all over the world come to Disneyland Disneyland is located on 67 acres of land transformed into an entertainment center for people of all ages Disneyland is a world of imagination excitement adventure and enjoyment well-known Disney characters entertain visitors to Disneyland many people enjoy riding on the stern wheel boat named The Mark Twain the great variety of entertainment attracts millions of visitors to
