Description: A study of the Romantic painter, Joseph Mallord William Turner (1775-1851) whose sensitivity to patterns of light on air, land and water prefigured the Impressionists. The film is divided into three parts: the first contrasts a storm at sea with the peacefulness of the English countryside; the second opposes the great cities of history and legend to scenes of catastrophe; the third deals with the paintings of his last twenty years.
