Creator: Learning Corp of America
Complete Record: In 1945, after its liberation from Japanese rule, Korea was divided into two sections. In 1950 the North Koreans, encouraged by their Communist allies, attacked South Korea. Truman wanted to intervene to defend the South, but America lacked the legal authority to do so. America brought the issue to the United Nations, which agreed to send a military force to help South Korea. General Douglas MacArthur successfully headed the UN forces, but when he ignored Truman's order not to discuss pursuing the war over Chinese territory, he was relieved of his command. In line with the Presidents concept of limited war, the fighting in Korea ended with an armistice line near the 38th parallel that originally divided North and South.
