Complete Record: The film is based on Walt Whitman's poem, "Out of the cradle endlessly rocking", one of the most crucial poems in his epic, "Leaves of grass." The film's creators have made no attempt to edit the poem's text but rather to create an authentic visual and auditory setting for it. The poem is a dramatic evocation by the adult poet of that boyhood experience which determined him to be a poet. The film was shot is several locations including the north coast of Long Island near Whitman's home
