Description: Original camera footage edited for broadcast for KNTV San Jose Channel 11 news, September 15, 1966. The accompanying script, read by the newscaster, provides details of the stories and completes the broadcast. Reel 1: Segment 1 (sound): Interview with Santa Clara University Broncos' football coach Pat Malley, who announced today he's going into Saturday's opening season game against UC Davis without three of his starters. Malley comments on the team's fitness and injuries, especially Rich Levine who separated his shoulder and will be out for the entire year. Segment 2 (silent): Exterior shots of a suburban ranch house, with a car parked in the driveway. Backdrop to a story on the trial starting of two men, Robert Bagnall of Sunnyvale, and Richard Flint of San Jose, accused of kidnapping, burglary, and attempted extortion. The script reads, "Officers say it was at this quiet residential street at 3202 Elaine Drive last August 19th that the two entered the home of Mrs. Eugene Bastianon. After binding & gagging her, they forced her onto a mattress doused with a flammable liquid. Threatening to light the mattress, they ordered the woman's husband, a Sunnyvale bank officer, to leave 20,000 dollars in a parking lot opposite his bank. The men fled the house shortly after the call, and failed to pick up the cash..." Segment 3 (silent): First part is silent footage of a meeting between an Almaden Valley parents group and the school officials at San Jose school district headquarters. Script reads, "Parents of small school sheltered in Almaden Valley have been complaining to school district officials lately about a certain dangerous pathway between home and the classroom...about a hundred Almaden residents complained about the pathway and lack of bus service. As expected the school officials listened, then restated the problem of lack of money to buy new buses.." Second part is footage of young children walking hand-in-hand down a sidewalk in a rural area, with orchard on one side. The children cross the street over to a large dirt area near an orchard, then the camera cuts to the sign and exterior of Henderson Elementary School building. Reel 2: Segment 1 (color, sound): University of California President Clark Kerr, presenting on the finances and growth of the UC system. He talks about the challenge of expanding student enrollment while also improving the overall distinction of the UC, including libraries and number of Nobel prize winners. Script reads, "Clark Kerr...today hailed the Berkeley campus as the most distinguished of the state universities. Kerr's statement came at the completion of eight years as president of U.C...." Segment 2 (silent): Shots of a sign, "Institute on Solid-State Circuit Design," then an auditorium style classroom filled with men in suits with nametags. A lecturer starts to speak and the lights dim. According to the script, "Over a hundred electronic engineers are gathered at Santa Clara University today and tomorrow...The engineers, from California and Eastern electronics firms, are taking part in a special institute on modern solid state circuit design..." Segment 3 (silent): Shots of a sign, "Voters may register here - Registrar of Voters, Santa Clara County," and people inside the registrar's office filling out voter registration forms. Script reads, "If you haven't registered to vote by now, forget it. Five p.m. was the deadline. The Registrar of Voters Office at 45 West St. James Street reported a slight increase in the number of people registering in their office. Most of them came during the last hours of the day. Assisting the clerks were deputy registrars from the League of Women Voters..." Segment 4 (silent + sound): Silent shots of a pilot getting out of a fighter plane. Close up of a decal on the side of the plane advertising the National Championship Air Races in Reno, September 22-25th. Mechanics working on plane, shots of the propeller, pilot in cockpit. Sound interview by Dennis Rowedder with the pilot, Lieutenant Commander Chuck Klusman, who survived being shot down over Laos and escaped from a Laotian prison camp by walking 35 miles to safety. Script reads, "Lieutenant Commander Chuck Klusman and Sandy Falconer, both Navy aviators, will be flying F8F World War II Grumman Bearcats. They were out at the Monterey Airport today, checking out their aircraft. Using these two high performance airplanes, this team hopes to bring back with them the trophy which symbolizes the 1966 world speed championship in unlimited aircraft pylon racing..." Reel 3: Segment 1 (sound): Interview with Republican National Committeewoman Ann Bowler of Long Beach, who is asked about Richard Nixon and Ronald Reagan. Segment 2 (silent + sound): Silent shots of San Francisco Warriors basketball players practicing indoors followed by an interview with coach Bill Sharman. Script reads, "San Francisco Warrior coach Bill Sharman is satisfied with the condition of his basketball players, but they need more work on the fundamentals. Sharman says the condition of the players was encouraging when they began their two weeks of workouts here in San Jose. The status of Jim King was cleared up by Sharman...King is a guard for the Chicago Bulls and Sharman said that this is the situation...We asked Sharman which rookies were the most impressive...Also the question in many minds is why trade Guy Rodgers???"
