Description: This black & white educational film is about Mao Zedong, the Chinese Communist Revolution, and a look at what Mao's dreams might be for the future of the communist cause. Copyright 1966. Opening titles: "Thunder Over Asia" (:06-:49). Great Wall of China. Title: "The Dragon and His Dreams". Donkeys and camels. Mao's mountain hideaway, located at Phoenix Mountain, Yangjialing, Wangjiaping and Yiyuan. Mao Zedong (1:26) accompanied by staff and an unidentified westerner. An informal class is shown, with the instructor supposedly teaching military tactics for the defeat of the Japanese and the Nationalist Army. The "tactics of terror " -- guerilla warfare -- are taught. Mao speaks (2;04). Japanese air attack; bombs are dropped on buildings and civilian targets as Japan attacks China in 1937. Japanese Army advances and is shown engaging in urban warfare in Nanking. Civilians, including children are injured and killed. Mao's red guerilla armies are on the move (3:23). Red Army approaches with a ragtag bunch and small array of weapons. Mao's guerillas are seen as heroes and treated as such in a parade (:50-3:39). Japanese surrender in China, 1945 (3:54). Chinese people are tired of war. Famine, misery and death. People eat grass. Mao's army strikes against the Nationalists in a "war of national liberation" (4:27). Civil war in the country. General George C. Marshall from the U.S.A. comes to China as an emissary, to speak to both sides and negotiate a power sharing agreement (4:42). General Zhou Enlai signs documents creating a coalition government of both Communist and Nationalist elements. Communist party. Map of China's Red Wave. November 1, 1949, all of mainland China is Communist.(3:40-5:57). Chinese soldiers march at a victory parade in Beijing. Mao waves to the crowd (6:08). Explosions at night, warfare. In 1950, North Korea invaded South Korea and the U.N. sends in U.S. troops to protect South Korea from falling to the Communists. Heavy fighting in the dead of winter. Troops fire and crawl on the ground. Artillery fire. China enters the war on the side of North Korea. Stalemate. July 1953, a truce fixes boundary lines. U.S. suffers heavy casualties. Sign for the 38th Parallel (7:41). Communist troops withdraw to the north. Red Forces cheer and chant, they feel they have won and Mao says they did. Mao predicts that communism will rule the world. Troops march. In 1951, Tibet invaded by Chinese troops. In 1959, Communists crush the Tibetan revolt.. Tibet refugees flee to India (7:59-9:34). Now, China is trying to spread communist ideals to India. Flags fly. India's leader Prime Minister Nehru goes to Peking, China. Mao meets with India's Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru, October, 1954. Mao smiles with Nehru. In 1963, China launches border raids on India. India's troops are injured. In 1965, the 25th anniversary of the end of WWII, Mao renews calls for the universal spread of communism. Vietnam's communist leader Ho Chi Minh is shown (11:44). China will assist the Viet Cong in Vietnam (9:35-11:57). Mao once again appears in front of enormous crowds at a celebratory event; he calls on the world's minorities to revolt against western oppression. People cheer as Mao steps forward and waves. Communist China is on the rise: children cheer, a military parade, troops march (11:58-13:06). End credits (13:07-13:30).
