Description: Presented by the Association of Rice Alumni, this 1950s promotional film celebrates Rice University (then known as Rice Institute) in Houston. After recounting the history of the university’s founding, the film highlights Rice’s facilities, curriculum, distinguished faculty, extracurricular activities, social events, and athletic programs. The title refers to the archway through which incoming students enter and graduating students depart the campus. In the early 1990s, it became a Rice tradition that students should only pass through the Sallyport at matriculation and commencement. Ruth and Shad E. Graham produced the film. Ruth was a Rice graduate. Her husband, Shad, was the owner of Texas News Trailers as well as the Houston representative for Fox Movietone.
