THIS TOWN SURE HAS CHANGED

[Music] this town sure has changed why I remember when you get a bowling ball down Main Street and you wouldn't hit anybody now building spring up downtown while your back is turned and all this change has come about and what seems like just a few years landmarks disappear before your eyes almost [Music] and new landmarks take their place [Music] and many of our new landmarks tell you that the people here abouts have changed too they live better and one of the reasons you might say is that they think better they've grown broad and that's good they sell me a lot of chain we do everything with a little bit more efficiency we has changed growing so fast we even had to put up a new addition to our power plant impressive isn't it well look inside why I can remember some vacant land on the edge of town just a while back seems like but it isn't bacon [Music] they came in with a fleet of motor scrapers and moved more dirt in three weeks that all the snow and rain and frost and wind had moved in a thousand years [Music] [Applause] [Music] and they pushed it around and spread it out and changed the face of the entire place they have the plans called for a whole lot of changes miles of trenches for gas pipes [Music] deep into the earth with new water mains they brought in concrete and yards and yards of asphalt before long there was a shopping center to help make living in the suburbs a greater pleasure that's the biggest change of all this town has suburbs can you beat it yes a lot of change [Music] back in the early fifties they said we don't need a new airport not enough traffic so they didn't build a new airport [Music] but you know it seems like everything happens at once pretty soon the paper mill built a new edition they installed new equipment motors and pumps for the tons and tons of water needed to produce paper and other processing equipment using more power than ever before you [Music] they had to hire new people to run the equipment and they had to hire spesh and they had to have more engineering skills men to dream up new methods [Music] all the time the bakery was expanding its volume they built a modern plant and started moving in new equipment by the car loan its change that improves the product change that keeps it profitable at the cement plant they reacted to the need for buildings and highways by doubling their now all this increased business has a sort of chain reaction suddenly this town is a place to come to salesmen and scientists city planners and watershed experts teachers and technicians nurses and nutritionists military men and business mail all found something to do here [Music] the big motor scrapers started changing things again [Music] and the earth movers came in big and busy they cut down the hill and filled in the low spots [Music] then they cleared the right of way and when it was flat and level the long wide runway stretch from here till morning [Music] then they put together the slickest airport terminal you've ever seen [Music] it's not just pretty it's functional an efficient terminal to help move goods and people into and out of this town talk about change out on the farm they're showing town folk what efficiency really means in the last 20 30 years farming has changed more than in all the previous thousands of years fewer and fewer farmers are beating more and more city people [Music] machines have taken the place of horses and to do all their jobs better Farmers of mechanized nearly everything and this efficiency on the farm helps other industries to farmers by billions of gallons of fuel just to keep their equipment running not to mention all the other things they buy that city people make and the changes of given farmers more leisure to more for less that's a big change and in that way to this town has made progress but then so is the whole nation actually this town is just a little piece of everywhere all rolled into one [Music] then forest here is only one man one farmer he could be any farmer when you think of in that way you can see why change comes about one farmer decides to buy a new combine and other invests in another tractor and so on all wanting the best so they can produce better it's true to the store owner who opens a branch store he's reinvesting his earnings to make more profit that's his MO and is the motive of a lot of people more profit more money to put back into the business to grow and expand that's why this town has changed thousands of individual decisions to improve property to risk capital to use the tools of today for a better tomorrow but the tools must be at hand and the power to run everywhere everyday men are putting power to work to change the face of the earth men make the machines that provide the power and with it goes a certain responsibility as he shows his crop and reaps his harvest the farmer feels a responsibility to the land when the course of a river is altered there's an obligation to the valley to the entire watershed there's a responsibility to future generations in plans for conservation of natural resources [Music] there's a responsibility in the making transporting and selling of manufactured resources it's a deep responsibility it can be felt by companies that design engineer and manufacture machines that power the changes this is the home of one such creative company thousands of confident shareholders invest their money and create a responsibility for management in its decisions to use profits wisely to advance the cause of research and product development and to build and purchase new facilities management accepts its responsibilities and thus creates new jobs new products new business and more jobs the people who work in this plant are only a few of the thousands who work in this company's plants across the land and around the world and the volume of work they turn out is almost overwhelming missions chemicals minerals cement and food then there are how and here is the Hall of giants main erection floor twelve hundred and eighty six feet long 1286 almost a quarter of a mile test facilities and methods are of necessity complex precision balancing and ruling over speed tests are performed on huge 90-ton rotors part of the for a city of 400,000 people [Music] transformers are put to the torture of simulated thunderstorms and subjected to the lightning like bolts of 3 million volts [Music] when it's right when it's perfect massive equipment such as this is ready to fulfill its promise to a nation that believes in change it's more than cold steel it's more than inanimate machinery it represents manufacturing and it represents engineering in action allis-chalmers engineering the kind of engineering you can see at the vast hiwassee dam in North Carolina to the engineer the water in the lake behind the dam is power stored power energy at rest you might say unseen the water thunders down hidden pipes the gate operating ring opens so deeply in the damn that only turpis marks the Wonder work of the one but the water intake level drops all the while all day long then in the evening the generator is shut down [Music] the gate operating ring is closed the generator becomes a motor driving the turban as a huge pump and reverses its flow the machine the water turned on the way down now pumps it back up into the lake perpetual motion not quite but even so it is a real triumph of engineering and even more its acceptance by a company of its responsibility the responsibility accredit for success the risk of failure falls on many shoulders at many locations in the United States as well as in Canada Mexico Australia England Italy France and other parts of the world the very diversity of the company's products and the broad scope of its operations widen the viewpoint and challenged the mind of every employee no matter what his job or what product he works on it may be deep tillage tools that help turn otherwise barren land into highly productive irrigated farms orchards and vineyards it may be pumps and electric motors fabricated in a tradition of precision craftsmanship it may be an automatic are those who designed and those who build the all crop Harvester there's the satisfaction of knowing it has almost single-handed virtually revolutionized the American harvest it's a deep satisfaction a radically new axial flow compressor over the satisfaction is there all right in the product well made and the job well done for they're working on a huge and highly efficient electric power transformer or on dependable heavy-duty diesel engine generators these are vital power plants that off these diesel engines get their dependability well from careful manufacture of course but also from continuing research that will further improve performance and efficiency product research with results like this the first fuel cell powered vehicle in the world [Music] and basic research adele's into the long-range future [Music] [Applause] the secrets of energy of the universe the power of the future is still being sought in laboratories like this however man and machines have already turned some of the blueprints of science into reality electricity made possible by the atom is now closer to all of us nuclear power plants one of the benefits of the peaceful uses of atomic power but research is never ending there are still many unsolved mysteries of energy and matter laboratories will continue the research effort for the ultimate source of power in the years to come yes the long-range future sparkles here in research just as the productive past twinkles brightly in the eyes of these members of an allis-chalmers retired employees club these are this town has changed so his yours so as the nation so has the world change is the hallmark of progress progress comes from the vision of men who believe in change men who skilled minds and skilled hands produced tools of progress machines that power a growing world to build a better world [Music]
