Complete Record: David idolizes his father, who dreams his son will be a champion cross-country runner. David’s father is dying. To escape this realization, David cuts himself off from other people, becoming a loner. He also turns off his emotions. When he realizes his father dies, he can’t cry and begins to run, for hours. Finally he realizes his father wanted to see him win and returns to compete in the race.
