Description: One of the "This Land of Ours" films made by prolific producer Carl Dudley, this 1950s educational film looks at the state of Utah in the American west. Utah means "top of the mountain" and is bordered by five states: Wyoming, Idaho, Nevada, Arizona, and Colorado (:34). This state was originally under water, as evidenced by the wave-cut terraces (:45). The largest of what remains is The Great Salt Lake (1:02), so salty a person can float in it. Utah’s Mormon roots date to July of 1847 when Brigham Young declared "This is the Place" for his pioneers to settle, memorialized in a statue (1:16). The capital is Salt Lake City (1:28), which has multiple statues as reminders of its Mormon background, including a large one of Brigham Young, head of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (1:42). The capital building at State Street (1:50) has a dome of Utah copper and walls of Utah granite and marble. The first Mormon Temple (2:05) has many interesting architectural elements, including a golden figure of Moroni, the angel from the Book of Mormon, who sits atop the East Tower (2:19). The Mormon Tabernacle (2:27), finished in 1867, has amazing acoustics. Also on Temple Square is a monument to seagulls, who appeared and devoured crickets in the first year of farming in 1848 (2:48). Another large city is Ogden, named after Canadian explorer Peter Skene Ogden (3:05) and serves as a shipping center for cattle (3:14). Utah also has agriculture, which relies on irrigation systems (3:31-3:42). People hand-pick peaches and vegetables (3:44-4:00). Tractors harvest fields of wheat (4:00) as cattle graze on alfalfa (4:11). Dairy is a prominent industry (4:12-4:39), as are sheep (4:39-4:53). Utah also cans its produce (4:55). Salt is gathered by harvesters at the shore of the Great Salt Lake and sent for processing, such as at the Royal Crystal Salt Company (5:07-5:27). Steel is also a manufactured here, with the largest plant in Geneva, where pig iron, steel plates, and structural steel are produced (5:38-5:55). Utah also mines non-ferrous metal due to an abundance of different minerals (6:01), with the largest surface copper mine in North America at Bingham (6:13-6:34). Visually, Utah is scenic, including the Dixie National Forest (6:41) and bird sanctuaries such as at Bear River (6:47). At Cedar Breaks National Monument Park, pink limestone cliff formations in 47 different shades of color are breathtaking (6:59). Zion National Park features Zion Canyon, a spectacular gorge (7:11-7:32). Bryce Canyon National Park also features pink formations (7:41-7:56). Winter sports include skiing in the Wasatch Mountains (8:07-8:23), as is fly fishing (8:40) in the warmer months.
