Description: A nontechnical description of the design, construction and use of the Stanford linear accelerator. Presents a background account on its development and a discussion on the theory of its operation and the problems encountered in its construction and use. Examines the fabrication and testing of a two-mile long copper tube through which atomic particles will be fired, and of high-power radio tubes, called klystrons, which are used to project electrons down the tube. Compares various methods of projecting particles of minute dimensions.
