Complete Record: Archival annotation: “White Southerners present their frank and often startling opinions on segregation and integration during "The White South: Two Views," a special one hour television report. For the first half of the program entitled "The Southern Conservative," a cross-section of pro-segregationists are interviewed by Sylvan Meyer, vice president of Southland Publishing Company and editor of the Gainesville, Georgia, Daily Times. Mr. Meyer talks to W.D. Workman, associate editor of the State, a leading South Carolina newspaper, and his wife; the Reverend Robert Oliveros, rector of the St. Francis Episcopal Church in Greenville, South Carolina; Carl Broome, editor of a small weekly newspaper, the Brantley Enterprise, in Nahunta, Georgia; Elton B. Stephens. Birmingham, Alabama businessman; David J. Mays, a prominent Richmond, Virginia lawyer; and Dr. Henry Garrett, former professor of psychology at Columbia University. During the second half of the program, entitled "The Southern Liberal," the views of southern integrationists are explored through interviews with James McBride Dabbs, author, journalist, and teacher. Ralph McGill, publisher of the Atlanta Constitution and winner of the 1958 Pulitzer Prize for editorial writing; and Mrs. Wallace I. Schutt, a Jackson, Mississippi, housewife who is chairman of the Mississippi Advisory Committee to the U.S. Civil Rights Commission. "The White South: Two Views" will be broadcast across the country on the National Educational Television network of over 80 affiliated non-commercial stations. The first half of the special report was produced by NET by WGTV, the non-commercial television station in Athens, Georgia. The executive producer is Jerry Appy. Chief of production is Hill Bermont, and the director is David Fisher. The second half of the program was produced by NET by WGBH-TV, Boston's educational television station.
