Shaw won the Indianapolis 500 again in 1939 and 1940, and served as president of the Indianapolis Motor Speedway for a decade. At 1:17, the Jim Braddock vs. Joe Louis boxing match on June 22, 1937. This match was for the undisputed heavyweight championship. Louis won the fight which began the longest championship reign in boxing history.The fight took place at Comiskey Park in Chicago, Illinois. At 1:56, the film pays tribute to Tommy Farr, who also fought Louis in that year. Considered one of Louis' toughest ever fights, the bout lasted the full 15 rounds. The final result, a unanimous decision in favour of Louis, was controversial. At 2:13, the New York Rangers win the hockey championship over Detroit Red Wings. At 3:30, Glenn Cunningham wins the Columbian Mile for the fifth time. Cunningham was considered the greatest American miler of all time. He received the James E. Sullivan Award as the top amateur athlete in the United States in 1933. At 4:08, Oxford defeats Cambridge in the annual rowing race. This was the 89th Boat Race took place on March 24, along the River Thames. At 5:09, Don Budge is crowned as tennis champion. Budge is most famous as the first tennis player — male or female — to win all four Grand Slam tournaments in one year and complete the Grand Slam. At 6:12, Gar Wood wins the Gold Cup speed boat race in Long Beach,California. Wood was an inventor, entrepreneur, and championship motorboat builder and racer who held the world water speed record on several occasions. He was the first man to travel over 100 miles per hour (160 km/h) on water. At 7:16, the New York Yankees defeat the New York Giants to win the World Series. It was a rematch of the 1936 series. The Yankees team included Lou Gehrig and Joe DiMaggio, as well as Hall of Famers Joe McCarthy (mgr.), Bill Dickey, Lefty Gomez, Tony Lazzeri and Red Ruffing. Giants players who also ended up in the Hall are Carl Hubbell, Travis Jackson, Mel Ott and Bill Terry. At 8:12, Nebraska's Johnny Goodman is crowned nation's top amateur golfer. This was the 16th challenge for the Cup. It took place in Newport and consisted of a series of races between the defender Ranger, entered Harold S. Vanderbilt, and Endeavour II, the second in Sir Thomas Sopwith's line of Cup challengers. Ranger successfully defended the Cup by sweeping four races out of seven. At 10:57 a auto hill climb event is shown, won by 1936 champion Louis Unser. Louis Unser Jr. was renowned for his hill-climbing career, winning the Pikes Peak Hill Climb nine times between 1934 and 1953.
